HTC eReader Tab from HD2 Converted to Standalone App (updated)

Well, we knew clever developers would find a way to get the HTC Sense 2.5 eReader tab, from the leaked T-Mobile US HD2 ROM, onto current devices. They’ve done that already with custom ROMs and we figured it would eventually be installable with a CAB, but most expected it to come in the form of a tab add-on. Indagroove, on the other hand, has created a CAB that will install it as a standalone app, which I think makes much more sense. This means users can run it only when they need to use it and even better, you don’t need to have Sense 2.5 enabled to access your favorite eBooks anymore.

Quote from Indagroove:

“I’ve seen many people asking for a way to add the HTC eReader tab to their existing Manila, and while this is possible I think my solution here is even better. The eReader Manila tab is a memory hog, and offers little real function anyway — plus it is Manila version dependent. Attached is a standalone cab for the HTC eReader application, which doesn’t require the eReader Manila tab — or Manila at all for that matter. There may be some other HTC dependencies which may not exist on your specific ROM, but this has been cooked into and working on my Titanium ROM for a little while now and also tested and working on MightyMike’s “Impact” ROM for TP2.”

I just tested it on my HTC Windows Mobile 6.5 device (WVGA) which has a version of Sense without the eReader tab. I even tried disabling Sense just to make sure it was truly independent, and it worked – though a little laggy since I don’t have a powerful HD2. I’ve only been testing it for a couple minutes, but was able to launch and slide through pages of a book (screenshot above).

You can get it from Mobile Underground, but you’ll have to register in order to get the download. Seems that it must be installed to device memory too. Let us know if you were able to get it working on your device too, or if there are functions that don’t work in this version compared to the original.

Note: don’t forget to check out the library manager for the eReader and there are 300 free ePub books to get you started (haven’t tested either of these with the standalone app).

UPDATE: there appears to be another version, created by Mr. X on PPCGeeks. This one is newer (build 1.0.20113925) so it may be the one to download (indagroove’s is 1.0.20112511). It also allows Adobe and Borders account login/linking and comes with more books. The best part is you don’t have to register to get it. Try them out and let us know which works best. (thanks, Jeff in the comments)
