How to ReProgram Your Answer Key

supware.net’s GreenButton is a tiny application with huge usability to those who own devices short on hardware buttons, like the HTC Touch HD. This application will run on any device running Windows Mobile 5 and above and it’s only feature is to allow you to reassign the Green (Answer) Key.

You need to download it from its website and install it to device. After installation, you might notice your Answer Key not working anymore (does not bring up the phone dialer). Here’s the tricky part, when it comes to customization. You need to edit the shortcut called GreenButton.lnk from DEVICEWindowsStartUp which is responsible for the application behavior. Let’s say we want to use the Answer Key to launch Opera Mobile, so we copy (via beam or cable) GreenButton.lnk to the PC and open it in Notepad. The default shortcut looks like this:

44#"Program FilesGreenButtonGreenButton.exe"

In order to configure it to run Opera Mobile (or any other application, really), we need to edit the shortcut by adding the path to the application you want it to start at the end of the shortcut string, like:

44#"Program FilesGreenButtonGreenButton.exe" WindowsOperaL.exe

Note: Notice the space between the original string and the path you just added.

Save the file, copy it back to DEVICEWindowsStartUp (overwriting the original), soft reset and you have just configured your Answer Key to launch Opera Mobile. Follow the same procedure to configure the target to any application on your device. To unload it from memory, execute the shortcut again and to revert to defaults, uninstall it.

Note: You can still access you phone application in one of the following ways: either from the Start Menu or from the on screen soft button.
