In our coverage of CTIA with Microsoft’s Robbie Bach giving a keynote earlier today in Las Vegas, we stumbled upon a little bit more information about the much eagerly anticipated Windows Marketplace, Microsoft’s version of an applications store front for Windows Phone. There are two bits of good news in a promotional video given by Microsoft, so no additional information was given:
1. Self Service Refunds: I am assuming it’d be painless as just logging into your account within the allotted time frame (rumored to be twenty-four hours) and hitting the return button to return the application yourself and get your money back.
2. Purchase Back Ups: Microsoft made mention in the video that purchases would be backed up. Purchases made on the phone or PC can be synchronized in either direction. What I am hoping as the backup isn’t just the synchronizing of made purchases to the PC for a locally stored copy there, but rather a server-side backup like the iPhone/iTunes App Store where Microsoft’s server would remember what purchases you have made in the past for re-download for free later.
Given all that is happening, would a better Mobile Device Center or ActiveSync be forthcoming from Washington? There’s a lot of transfer and synchronization here, whether it be with the cloud or with the PC as in the case of the applications back up. It’d be nice to have everything in one place that is robust, easy to use, and can synchronize a mobile user’s “life without walls,” as per Microsoft’s campaign. I’m talking easy management and synchronization of music, podcasts, videos, photos, applications, documents and contents, and more. The ease of use would make Windows Phone a lot more consumer-friendly than Microsoft teaming up with fashion icons for designer themes and wallpapers.
