University Nominates Some Tech Words to Be Banned

Some tech words–as annoying as those may be–have made it to popular culture and have become colloquial. Such is the dilemma of Lake Superior State University in its List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness, which is now in its 35th year. Among those words that Lake Superior State University would want to do away with are apps, Tweeting, Twittering, retweet, sexting, and to friend–as a verb when used in the context of social networks.

The person who nominated the word “app” to the List wants to re-instate the word “program” for popular use. App is in reference to the applications that are on use on a computing platform and has since taken off with the iPhone “App” Store. According to the word’s nominee, “Is there an ‘app’ for making this annoying word go away? Why can’t we just call them ‘programs’ again?”

From the list, it seems that app is the least offensive word.
