So you may already know that before the Samsung Propel Pro there was the Propel, but did you know that before the Samsung Jack there was the Samsung Magnet (pictured top, left)? It seems that in order to cut costs, companies like Samsung (and Pantech with the Matrix and Matrix Pro) are extending certain phone platforms to multiple classes of devices.
This isn’t necessarily a bad practice – it allows OEMs to be more agile in developing new hardware. Car companies do it all the time – Lexus builds its ES series cars off of the Toyota Camry’s platform. The harm is just that the higher end versions of a particular platform can be confused for the lower model (if there isn’t enough differentiation), thus taking away a bit from the advantage of striving for the “premium” model.
