A number of people have been complaining about how the Touch Diamond’s screen shuts off very quickly after you make a call. It turns out that’s actually part of an almost very intelligent feature.
As realized by yelitterulez at xda-developers, when making a call the screen stays on if you leave the phone lying flat on a table. If you wait 10 seconds into the call, you can pick it up to your ear and the screen stays on.
BUT if you make a call with the phone slightly tilted/ slanted, the screen turns off as soon as the call gets connected!
The moment you hold the phone to your head the screen turns off. In fact: the moment you hide the screen with anything it turns off!
When you turn the screen back on manually, it stays on no matter if you hold your hand or head.
This explains why I was never seeing the screen shut off while making phone calls since I often use a Bluetooth headset. The screen only goes off when you put it up against your head. This makes perfect sense, since you’re not going to be looking at the screen when it’s pressed against your ear, and there’s no reason to let it waste battery life that way.
The problem is that when you take it away from your ear, the screen doesn’t automatically come back on. I’m sure this could be (and should be) fixed in a ROM update if it is able to sense when the phone is or is not in a vertical listening position pressed against some one’s head.
Note, this only works if you have FastDormantDisplay turned off (set to 0) in the following registry key:
HKEY_Local_MachineDriversBuiltInRIL
EnableFastDormantDisplayDuringCall = 0
