“My Pocket PC Phone Experience” Blog: Day 3

If you’ve got an HTC Wizard, you probably tend to play with the keyboard a bit – it’s quite fun to slide open and closed. I wasn’t too please with the motion of the keyboard though: it’s on two sliding tracks which don’t move perfectly in tandem, making so that you can wiggle the keyboard slightly side to side if it’s not shut or open all the way. The “click” that locks it in place is pronounced and secure.

Having a built in keyboard can be a huge help – it really speeds up text entry. The issue is that unless you’re very seasoned at using a thumb-board, you’ll have to keep an eye on your hands, and not the screen, thus making you more prone to errors while typing. This makes it a bit discouraging for use on longer emails, but ideal for short messages, like IMs or text messages.

The ergonomics of the Cingular 8125 makes it generally comfortable to type – when open, your index fingers rest on the top of the bottom half of the unit, making it feel like a messenger device. Once the keyboard is out, the screen switches to landscape just like it should, but as a reminder that WM 5.0 is slower than previous versions of the OS, the screen takes about one second to redraw to the other orientation. One second is noticeable and can be annoying.
