Since SOTI Pocket Controller doesn’t work with Palm, I had to search elsewhere for a third-party screen capture application. I came across a company called LinkeSoft, that makes a simple screen capture utility (aptly named “ScreenShot”) for Palm OS. It lets you assign a hardware button to snap the screen. Very handy.
I miss the Today screen! Palm doesn’t use a Today screen. They have a home menu that looks like the below it’s a no-frills, though very easy to use, iconic menu system. As far as I’ve been able to tell, the only way to get back to this menu is by pressing the home hardware button. I’ve found myself using the home button a whole lot.
I still have yet to get the Palm filled up with all of my PIM data, because I need to figure out the best way to get it to work with my Exchange account (I’m looking into third party software to do this). Once my PIM data is loaded, I’m going to want to be able to know, in one glance, when my next appointment is, and how many messages I have. The Palm, not having a Today screen like Windows Mobile does, is no help in this department. This also makes me think: why doesn’t Windows XP have a Today-like screen? Why isn’t the desktop natively used to show one’s next appointment, amount of email unread, and so on?
This weekend I’ll be heading out of town for the holiday, and I’ll be taking along the Palm to use as a text messenger and EV-DO modem for my laptop. I’ll have a juicy report on how that went, next week.
