Ah, Windows Mobile 6. It’s pretty, that’s for sure. Elements of Windows Vista can be found in various places in the new OS: the start button sports the new Windows logo, the top and bottom bars have a new glassy look to them, the Pocket Internet Explorer icon is the same as the one for IE7, and the other icons have been refreshed.
There are a good handful of important changes that have been made to WM 6. If you interested in what they are, be sure to check out our comparison review of WM 6 versus 5.0 here.
For several months, I had been using an HTC Tornado flashed with WM 6 from the good folks at Microsoft under a special arrangement (meaning, there will be no ROM update for Tornado owners). Back in March, I wrote a news bit about how WM 6 isn’t faster that WM 5.0. Well, using the new OS on a production device rather than one that’s been flashed for testing purposes, I can tell you that the performance is much more snappy that I had been experiencing. For example, quick dial brings up contacts VERY fast (and I’ve got 700 contacts to weed through), programs seem more responsive, and when I unlock the screen, the whole screen appears rather than the first half followed by the second half a moment later.
A reason for this speed increase may because the Tornado only has 64MB of ROM, whereas the S710 has twice as much, though I’ve compared the two with no programs open. Or, it could because the production version of WM 6 doesn’t have some performance-related bugs. Either way, I’ve found the WM 6 experience on the S710 to be enjoyable.
On Monday, I’ll write a conclusion post, which will be followed by a full, in-depth review, a few days after that.
