It gets a bit…irritating…seeing one of the most respected names in technology news be so biased towards a platform that is admittedly aged and in need of an upgrade, but still more capable and powerful than the other phone platforms in many respects. Biases aren’t welcome in any sort of journalism.
Do you remember when Gizmodo Unfairly Tested Mobile Browsers by using a last-generation version of Opera Mobile? Well, they made right by posting this follow-up, where they compare Opera Mobile 9.5 on three of the newer WinMo releases: XPERIA X1, AT&T Fuze, and the Samsung Omnia. The author concludes that the internet experience on the AT&T Fuze is his “closest thing to a recommendation.”
But what bothers the heck out of me is the unnecessary snide comments placed throughout the post. The author is unapologetically biased against Windows Mobile. To him, it doesn’t matter that Opera Mobile 9.5 brings a fantastic browsing experience – it’s still sitting on Windows Mobile, and thus incompetent. Take a look:
If you haven’t noticed in our reviews of Windows Mobile phones, we’ve basically ceased comparing to them anything but other WM phones, in a wishful attempt at dulling our totally appropriate disdain for the OS, lest the review essentially turn into one giant bitchfest. They’re clearly off in their own world of performance and function.
I won’t touch another Windows Mobile phone until WM7 or at least 6.5, no matter how awesome the hardware looks. Call me when it runs Android.
So, it’s good to know that going forward, anything said about Windows Mobile over at Gizmodo will be done through the filter of this bias.
