Delayed WM 6.5 Release Pushes Back WM 7

There is evidence that Windows Mobile 6.5 is coming, and rumors are still swirling over a February announcement at Mobile World Congress in Europe. However, the announcement doesn’t translate to near-immediate availability of the operating system, as noted by IntoMobile, with most bloggers speculating that the release will be mid-year 2009, with devices to trickle in after that–we all know how long it takes manufacturers and carriers to release OS updates.

What is significant is that this will probably push Windows Mobile 7 to mid-year 2010 or end of the year 2010 at the earliest. There is usually a one-year gap between major OS updates because of the time it takes to test and for carrier certification. Furthermore, unless Microsoft can guarantee a free update to all users, it doesn’t want to upset those who have purchased a new Windows Mobile 6.5 to have it be replaced a few months later with a new operating system.

The DigiTimes is further re-emphasizing that Microsoft will work with partners to bring the new OS to users and not develop a Zune Phone, as previously speculated.
