You Can't Turn Off Data On the G1

Bad news if you're traveling abroad and are an owner of the T-Mobile G1 running on Android. It seems that you cannot turn off data roaming on the handset, which will result in roaming charges incurred.

A tipster on Gizmodo had returned from a trip to the UK to find an expensive bill. According to a T-Mobile supervisor the G1 always accesses the internet whether you are sending text messages or calls—even when the data roaming features are off. The end of the conversation resulted in the supervisor suggesting that "the phone should have been left in the USA to avoid these charges."

Gizmodo is also reporting: Naturally, there was no mention of this when he made his initial call to T-Mobile before his trip to get international calling and text added. All they said was data roaming would be charged at $10 per MB and that if he did not access the internet everything would be fine. As it turns out, he was charged approx $.15 every 3-7 minutes on average—but not all of it was from calls and texts. In his words, it was "almost as if the phone is pinging."

So much are the days when T-Mobile USA used to lead in the customer service department. On another note, I wonder if you can order a G1 without data service and just use voice.
