Microsoft has created a concept for a retail store. Should Microsoft do it? Would you shop there? According to Michael Gartenberg from Media Devices Today, Microsoft may not fare as favorably as rival Apple in the retail segment because most of Microsoft’s products come from third parties.
The idea for a Microsoft store is interesting. It could create added value for consumers and Microsoft could demonstrate how technologies from its labs and products could interact together to give consumers the ultimate experience, from Windows Mobile to surface computing to gaming.
Rather than going retail, Microsoft should set up a demonstration/display area within retailers, like Best Buy, to bring their products and research to enliven the consumer. Much like a mini-CES experience, the Microsoft booth could help to educate consumers. Perhaps with a trained specialist, a ten minute demonstration of Windows Mobile may make the platform less intimating.
For now, you can see the video of the concept on iStartedSomething and photos from the Microsoft press site.
