Windows Mobile a Distant Second in Internet Browsing

According to Apple Insider, Net Application’s February data shows the iPhone commanding much of the mobile internet browsing among smartphones, with Windows Mobile in a distant second, followed by Symbian and Android tied for the next spot, Palm, and RIM trailing behind.

The report puts the iPhone with nearly 2/3 of web traffic and Windows Mobile capturing almost 7%, which is quite a sizable spread between the two.

Although there are attractive browsing alternatives on the Windows Mobile platform, including Opera Mobile, which has come pre-loaded on many current HTC devices, and Skyfire, which supports many different web standards including Javascript, Flash, and Ajax, little progress has been made on the default Windows Mobile browser on many devices. Microsoft’s Pocket Internet Explorer has undergone little change to bring it to the ease of utility like Apple’s Safari with its double tap to zoom and pinch-and-zoom features.

What can Microsoft do to woo you to browse more on your Windows Phone? Perhaps Microsoft can even do one of those cute commercials–”I am a mobile executive and I am a Windows Phone” parody of the “I’m a PC” ads.
