It looks like HTC’s managed to accomplish the impossible when it comes to getting Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional to support capacitive touchscreens on the HTC HD2, but there is an issue that neither HTC nor Qualcomm–makers of the Snapdragon chipset inside the HD2–has been able to overcome, and that’s handling the 720p high-definition videos on the powerful 1 GHz device. One speculation is neither the hardware OEM nor the chipmaker has overcome a limitation of Windows Mobile to natively decode HD videos for smooth playback on the device, which seems probably considering that the same Snapdragon chipset could handle playback of 720p encoded videos on Android handsets like the Acer Liquid.
According to site MobileTechWorld, the issue of native HD video playback on Windows Mobile devices may go away once Windows Mobile gets upgraded to run on a Windows CE 6 core; currently Windows Mobile still runs on the older Windows CE 5 core. However, it looks like the folks at Qualcomm may not be waiting for an official solution from Microsoft. A job posting on the Qualcomm LinkedIn page shows that the firm is looking for some talented developers to solve the decoding issue on Windows Mobile handsets.
