Treo Pro Hops the Tech Divide to Sprint?

Keen eyes over at WMExperts have spotted a banner for the Treo Pro being “3G CDMA + EVDO” ready, meaning that the device could be expected to appear on Sprint or Verizon Wireless in the US.

The Treo Pro, previously reviewed, is available in its current incarnation as a GSM only device, with 3G HSPA connectivity. The device is sold through Palm and retailers unlocked and is not available subsidized in the USA through AT&T as it only supports AT&T 3G frequencies in the US.

My thought is that the CDMA Treo Pro would probably hit Sprint instead of Verizon since Verizon already offers a candybar QWERTY Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional phone in the form of the Samsung Saga, which closely resembles the Epix, also made by Samsung, for AT&T. Another reason is that Sprint would be able to offer its customers a more refined device over the Treo 800, which so far has been CDMA-only. The Treo Pro is slicker and more modern than the 800 and offers similar capabilities.

Perhaps one of the reason that AT&T certified the GSM Treo Pro for working on their networks, although not offering it through their channels or subsidizing it, is that the Treo Pro would confuse consumers with the Epix. Usually, carriers don’t like to offer similar devices at the same time as it may create consumer confusion. This same reasoning could be had with Verizon Wireless.
