Palm’s magnetic Touchstone charger for the Palm Pre is cool–place the phone on the magnetic charging dock and it floats there to charge. Now, Nokia is looking to do Palm one better and offer ambient charging, a method of charging by recycling all the radio frequencies that the device emits. By converting the radio frequency into electrical current, Nokia researchers are hoping to harness 50 milliwatts of power, which is just enough to top the battery off when the device is off. Currently, only 3-5 milliwatts can be harvested by the team.
Nokia is hoping that the ambient charging technology, along with solar power, can help to extend the life of cellular phone batteries between charges.
