The Pre Verdict, Pre-Launch

Just days before the launch of the much-touted and highly anticipated Palm Pre launch with the debut of webOS, gadget blogs Engadget and Gizmodo have weighed in with their reviews after having had roughly a week of time with the device.

It seems that the hardware leaves a lot to be desired, although the screen is fantastic. The keyboard was cramped, lacked auto-correction, and there are often complaints that the top row of the keyboard is too close to the bottom of the top half of the slider when it pops up. The camera was split as Engadget liked it but Gizmodo thought it was pretty bad. Where the Pre shines is the operating system and webOS seems to please with multi-tasking, Synergy for collecting information across multiple accounts (like Facebook, Google), and built in applications. The plus is that you get Sprint Navigator, which is Sprint’s turn-by-turn GPS solution, for free with the Pre data bundle.

The Pre’s webOS offers some little goodies, like an expandable notifications area on the bottom, pop-ups for Calendar events, and the cards UI implementation was great. The device did crash a few times on Engadget’s test after a number of apps were open, but it seems to be a solid first entry for a new OS.

You can head on to the sites to check out the verdict and decide for yourself whether or not you will get a Pre.
