T-Mobile to Neuter G1 Android Upgrade Path

The T-Mobile G1 was Google’s debut into the mobile space with a partnership with HTC. Since the device’s inception on T-Mobile’s network, there were a few upgrades to the G1′s Android OS, with the latest being the Cupcake code, bringing the ROM to version 1.5. However, the fun and glory stops there as it seems Google may be ending the love for the G1 as there will no longer be updates beyond Android 1.5 for G1 owners.

Software and ROM updates are usually a touchy subject among mobile phone users who want to preserve the ability to utilize the same hardware with a firmware update and not have to purchase a new phone for new or added features. In Microsoft’s instance, the software maker leaves major Windows Mobile OS updates up to device manufacturers or carriers.

Since the G1, T-Mobile USA has launched a keyboard-less version of the device called the MyTouch 3G, which is based on the Magic hardware platform. European users are also privy to a similar device called the HTC Hero, which uses HTC’s proprietary Sense UI.
