For those looking at multi-touch and salivating over its features to quickly pinch and zoom on their Windows Mobile handset, device makers may be waiting to see the situation between Apple and Palm before proceeding to include that bit of innovation.
According to MobileCrunch, Apple had “asked” Google to not include the capability in the release of the T-Mobile G1. Developers have found way to demonstrate that should Google decide to implement the feature in the future, the technology is there for the G1 in the hardware.
Moreover, Mobile Gadget News reported that Apple has recently been awarded a patent for its touch capabilities. The patent award, filed before the iPhone’s release, came after the announcement of the Palm Pre. Since then, the two firms have threatened each other coyly without mentioning the other’s name. Apple had publiclyy state that it will vigorously defend its technologies and intellectual property while Palm had rebutted saying that its legal team is ready. In the Apple-Palm crossfire, the situation gets a little more complicated as Palm had wooed previous Apple employees to help revive the company with the Pre.
Perhaps the real reason that multi-touch isn’t available on Windows Mobile is to see the technology evolve and how the intellectual property disputes pan out between Apple, Google, and Pre. However, since we haven’t heard of an Apple lawsuit against Palm just yet, maybe HTC should dive into the waters and see. Who’s ready to take a bite out of that Apple?
