Sprite Backup has been a mainstay solution for backing up Windows Mobile devices, and we had previously reviewed Sprite Backup version 6.1. The popular desktop-handheld solution will be receiving an alternative from Sprite known as Virtual Mobile, a backup service that synchronizes the handheld device’s contents over the internet onto a secure server.
Wireless backup has its advantages over traditional backup like Sprite Backup as it doesn’t require a memory card to store the backup files or proximity to a desktop with regularly scheduled backup intervals. Virtual Mobile can theoretically backup and synchronize whenever a device is in range of and connected to an internet source, whether it be cellular data or over WiFi.
Sprite’s Virtual Mobile service backs up your contacts, SMS text messages, photos, calendar entries, and call history automatically according to WMExperts. The service is in beta right now and you can register at Sprite’s Virtual Mobile webpage.
Sprite is offering its service at a time when Microsoft has just launched a beta of its My Phone service, which we did a preview. Another popular wireless backup service for PIM contents is Dashwire. It seems like Sprite may be charging for its Virtual Mobile service, and unless the interface is superb or Sprite adds some compelling options, My Phone’s basic free service (an upgraded subscription version will also be available from Microsoft) and Dashwire should satisfy the needs of most users.
