Sprint Xohm Goes Live: WiMax in Baltimore

Sprint has officially launched its WiMax network in Baltimore. The New England city will be able to get on its Xohm network sans contract on a daily or monthly pass. According to SprintUsers.com, the service will cost $25 per month or $10 per day. Not bad, considering daily WiFi rates. WiMax modems start at $60. Sprint says that it will build a dual WiMax/EVDO modem for falling back onto its third generation network if the fourth generation WiMax isn’t available. Good news for the carrier for finally launching WiMax.

WiMax is a fourth generation wireless technology that will compete with LTE, a standard adopted by rivals AT&T and Verizon Wireless. LTE isn’t expected to begin trial until 2010, which gives WiMax a good head start on adoption. Given Sprint’s pricing, which is very competitive, if the network does build out into more areas, Sprint should not have a hard time finding customers.
