Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10: Nice, But Not Ready for Primetime Yet

Sony Ericsson has unveiled that the user interface–previously referred to as UX for User eXperience–on the Sony Ericsson Android XPERIA X10 (also previously referred to as the X3), is now known as the Nexus UI. Nexus provides a custom overlay on top of Android and inegrates neatly with media files through the MediaScape interface and with social networking through the SocialScape interface. According to Gizmodo, which had some hands-on time, you can opt to use stock Android apps if you’d like and aren’t bullied into the Nexus experience if you prefer a more vanilla build of Android.

According to Gizmodo, the build quality was decent, but not special, and didn’t evoke a sense of passion that the Motorola Droid puts out. That said, the device does come with a 4-inch FWVGA 853 X 480 touchscreen (similar to the Droid) and a Snapdragon processor (the same variety used on the Android Acer Liquid). The build of Android isn’t yet finalized for the hardware yet on the X10 so there were still some lags and speed issues, which we’re hoping won’t appear on the final shipping version.

Speaking of pre-release builds, Engadget Mobile is also reporting that the on-screen software keyboard is not that great of an experience on the XPERIA X10.

The camera quality is really nice on the device according to Gizmodo.

The good news is that Sony Ericsson said that they’re still trying to work with carriers to offer the device at a subsidized cost, which should help the device get adopted by more people.
