Rumors on the blogosphere have it that the OQO may no longer be. The diminutive UMPC (ulta-mobile PC) that attempts to be both a netbook and a smartphone/PDA may be folding its operations. The Model 2+ was announced several months ago, but a release date was never announced. It now looks like that the Model 2+ won’t be heading into production. Web retailer eXpansys even cancelled pre-orders for the 2+, citing uncertainties:

Dear Customer,

Unfortunately eXpansys has taken the decision, due to uncertainties

to stock availability of the OQO Model 2+, to remove the OQO model

from our web site..

The cancellation of pre-orders combined with the sudden resignation of the CEO have led many to believe that the company has released its last UMPC in the Model 2. According to jkOnTheRun, a moderator on another web forum has stated that the company is strapped for cash: “It lacks the funds to keep going, cash is tight and work hours have been reduced.”

An OQO competitor could be seen in the HTC Shift, which features a sliding keyboard and tilting screen. The Shift, while not as pocketable as the OQO, features a larger screen. Both models are capable of running a variant of the full Windows operating system. HTC has not announced any intentions on replacing the aging Shift since its release.
