A Samsung executive has reportedly promised a ten-fold increase in AMOLED display production starting in July of next year, when its new facility dedicated to their manufacture will supposedly increase capacity from three million to 30 million screens per month. Lee Woo-Jong, vice president of display marketing, went on to say that he believes that devices using the so-called active-matrix organic light-emitting diode screens will grow by 35 times, to 700 million, by 2015.
Samsung builds AMOLED displays for both itself and its competitors, making recent shortages a potential conflict of interest, as the company could have prioritized its own devices like the Galaxy S over such other popular models as HTC’s Droid Incredible and EVO 4G. Instead, claims Lee, all customers — including itself — are given equal access to the limited number of components; Samsung reportedly made its own employees wait on Galaxies so that more would be available for the general public.
Update: The EVO 4G actually sports a TFT LCD, not an AMOLED. Article has been updated to reflect the error.
