New Customs Policy Means Your Laptop can be Seized

I have read a few articles that discuss a few new U.S. Customs policies that allow for agents to be able to routinely–as a matter of course–seize, make copies of, and “analyze the information transported by any individual attempting to enter, re-enter, depart, pass through, or reside in the United States” when returning from international travel.

For many who are traveling on business, having your laptop is a must. I have a friend who lives in Mexico and visit him on occasion and have never taken my laptop. Let me put that into perspective. I am ALWAYS connected. I can’t live without my email and Internet access. My smartphone NEVER leaves my side. I prefer to travel light (meaning no bulky laptop).

Your smartphone is full capable of handling all tasks that you might need to perform while abroad. Internet cafe’s are very popular as well. If you need to access files, a USB Thumb drive is a perfect companion. You can also store files remotely via Yahoo Briefcase or even within your web-based email.

If you do need to take your laptop, encrypt your data and try to lock out the ability for software to be installed. You can read more about it on CNET.
