Mozilla Fennec: Timeline, Non-Touchscreen Support, Support for Extensions

We had some questions about Firefox for mobile, or Fennec as Mozilla’s is calling it, so we reached out to the company. You may remember that recently we showed you how add-ons and extensions work in Fennec, plus we gave you a tour of the latest Alpha 1 release. Read on to learn more about Fennec add ons/extensions, the timeline for the Beta and final release, and support for non-touchscreen devices.

Will all add-ons be available in Fennec that are available in Firefox? If not, how will it be determined which are available?

The add-ons available for Fennec now and in the future are determined by the developers of each add-on to decide which products they would like to support.

Many Firefox add-ons “just work” for Fennec, in which case the original developer simply needs to add the Fennec application ID ({a23983c0-fd0e-11dc-95ff-0800200c9a66}) to the appropriate place in their install.rdf file. For others, it will require that the add-on developer tweak their UI to fit within Fennec’s framework. Mark Finkle has blogged on Fennec add-ons, which you can view here.

There also a wiki article for any interested add-on developers.

Do you have a time frame on when Fennec will be out of alpha and beta?

We expect to launch a beta version for Windows Mobile sometime this summer, and make it generally available by the end of the year.

Will there be a Fennec version for non-touchscreen Windows Mobile devices?

Non-touch screen support is out of the scope of our 1.0 release, but will be considered for future releases.

A big thanks to Brad Lassey from the Mozilla mobile team for answering this short round of questions!
