Skybox is Microsoft’s service that allows users to manage and control their cellphones, similar to Dashwire which was previously reviewed. The service will allow users to backup and view messages, calls, contacts, and calendars through a cloud computing portal. In this manner, if a phone gets replaced, or is lost, the data is backed up on servers. ZDNet is reporting that Skybox 1.0 will be available to users in beta sometime this month and may be announced at Mobile World Congress.
Microsoft will later update the service to Skybox 1.5, which should provide similar functions. There may be a subscription for premium options and a free basic version. Version 2 of the service is scheduled to launch with Windows Mobile 7 according to ZDNet’s speculations.
Skybox will integrate with Microsoft Live services, Live Mesh, and Skymarket for purchasing applications.
