In a move to fight off competition in the smartphone market, the Redmond company will be makings its foray into building hardware. The firm will be using a 600 MHz processor and a graphics chip from NVIDIA. In a witty report from The Inquirer, the author writes, "What do you get if you take an Iphone, remove the clean UI, user friendliness, nice industrial design, battery life, cachet, functional OS, and in general everything else that makes it worthwhile? The new Microsoft phone, powered by Nvidia."

The phone is scheduled to be announced in February 2009 at the 3GSM conference.

According to Apple Insider, the NVIDIA chip comes in 3 flavors. Microsoft will be using the Tegra APX 2500 made for smartphones, with the other two being made for handhelds and small computing devices like car consoles. The 2500 chip will provide support for: a 600 MHz MPCore Processor, support for a 12 megapixel camera, GeForce ULV support for OpenGL ES 2.0, up to 720p H.264 decoding, and NVIDIA nPower technology that could enable over 10 hours of HD video playback and up to 100 hours of audio.
