Microsoft Focuses on Consumers with Windows Mobile 6.5

Microsoft is sending a message that it is targeting the consumer segment with Windows Mobile 6.5. With the release of 6.5 later this year, Microsoft is adding designer themes to Windows Mobile, with a theme from fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi to be the first out of the gates of Redmond. In addition, to appease the consumer crowd, a Theme Generator will be released later in the year to color-coordinate different elements of the user interface with colors from a user’s custom background. Now, users can not only choose their own background pictures, but can potentially change the color of selectors, soft keys, and other UI elements.

Also, the Marketplace, Microsoft’s version of the application store for Windows Mobile, will offer consumers a 24-hour return period. This is welcomed news for consumers considering Apple’s stance with the iPhone App Store offering no trial period and very little likelihood for refunds.

Microsoft is also hoping that partners like Facebook, Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Namco, Pandora, MySpace, and others will be placing more Windows Phones into the hands of consumers. The latest from Engadget Mobile is saying that the new Facebook application should be coming next month, with improved capabilities. The new Facebook ap will allow users to upload video clips directly to their wall.
