IRS to Repeal Cell Phone Accounting for Taxes

We had previously reported that the IRS wanted to tax users on a company-paid cell phone account for the amount of personal calls and/or text (SMS) messages they received, but now IRS commissioner Doug Schulman is asking Congress to repeal the law, stating that it would be way too difficult, and costly, for employers and employees to account for corporate and personal usage. According to Schulman, “The passage of time, advances in technology, and the nature of communication in the modern workplace have rendered this law obsolete.”

The IRS is trying to simplify its rules to make life easier for everyone. The cellular association in America, known as the CTIA, is in favor of this new position that Uncle Sam is taking.
