We have some new details about the Windows Mobile Marketplace now. Here is the info:
- Developers pay $99 annual fee, this includes the submission of 5 apps. Each additional app submission will cost $99
- Developers keep 70% of revenue and can set the price (this is the same arrangement that iPhone app developers get)
- Windows Mobile Marketplace will be available in 29 countries
- Marketplace to be install on “every single WinMo 6.5 device” (which makes us wonder if OEMs have the option to remove it)
- Through the Dreamspark program, student developers don’t have to pay the annual fee
This should appease developers. To get applications on Handango, MobiHand, or the other existing WinMo application stores, developers retain a far lower percentage of revenue from apps. This really makes us wonder what will happen to said existing application sellers. The Marketplace could (and will) destroy their business. The only silver lining I see for them is that they already have a MASSIVE library of Windows Mobile apps, and it’s possible that the Marketplace will only include new-ish apps, not legacy ones (which are still sold). So to get the apps from last year, you’ll still have to go through Handango, MobiHand, etc.
