HTC is looking at options to create its proprietary smartphone operating system. According to CFO Cheng Hui-ming in an interview with Bloomberg, “We continue to assess, but that requires a few conditions to justify.” What those conditions are to justify the creation of its own OS is not yet known. The company has made an attempt at feature phones with HTC Sense and its own feature phone OS on the Qualcomm Brew platform; that phone is called the HTC Smart.
The move is not too surprising considering the growing number of Android licensees and the new requirements from Microsoft for Windows Phone 7; HTC is a licensee of both platforms. The Android space is crowded and on the Windows Phone 7 side, Microsoft is not allowing third-party UIs–like the popular HTC Sense UI–as a third party skin on top of the company’s forthcoming OS. HTC had originally developed HTC Sense to maintain competitive advantage and to maintain a sense of consistency between various devices and platforms. It even extended the Sense interface to its HTC Smart feature phone.
To give a sense of perspective, Samsung has already gone on record with its proprietary Bada OS. You can read more information at Bloomberg.
