HP iPAQ K3 Clears FCC, Coming to AT&T Soon

With all the recent news and rumors about the sliding form factor from the Touch Pro2 and the slate form factor a la the Diamond2, it may be easy to forget the candybar QWERTY form. Luckily, HP hasn’t forgotten for those who still want a Windows Mobile device in the classic Treo form factor (think classic BlackBerry with touchscreen). The device has been recently spotted at the FCC as the iPAQ K3 Obsidian and is scheduled for an AT&T release.

The device combines high speed 3G data capabilities, but it looks like the real bottleneck here is the QVGA screen. Though the resolution isn’t as high as many modern devices, with VGA and WVGA being the standard, the K3 does sport an OLED touchscreen display, similar to the Omnia II from Samsung.

The K3 is expected to launch with Windows Mobile 6.5 on board, so expect it after October 6, the official launch day for the OS from Microsoft. The device was originally rendered with an interface that looks like Windows Mobile 7, but after delays on 7, HP is launching it with 6.5 on board instead.

With Palm now focusing on the Palm Pre featuring the webOS operating system, it looks like HP could potentially grab the attention of Treo owners who are looking for a Windows Mobile upgrade.
