HD Video on HTC with Nvidia Chips in 2009

You’ve seen and read our leak of the 2009 HTC lineup. The good news? Those devices look awesome. The even better news? They may sport an improved graphics capabilities courtesy of Nvidia! HTC may soon end its woes with consumer complaints about graphics and video performance issues.

According to WMPowerUser, the International Business Times is reporting that Nvidia and HTC are teaming up to bring greater media and graphics capabilities to the new devices of 2009. If you’ve been following the Windows Mobile blogs and pocketnow, you may be aware of HTC’s continuing graphics issues, which started with the TyTN II/Tilt and continues to the Touch Pro. Rumors have it that HTC has not and does not license the proper drivers used on the Qualcomm chipsets to get the maximum graphics and video performances. As such, HTC devices suffer from lags, sluggish performance, and slow downs, especially when viewing high resolution video contents and playing action-packed games.

The chip from Nvidia is called the Tegra. Tegra offers some great capabilities, including video output in HD 1080p resolution and HDMI support! Imagine that–Windows Mobile as your media server, pulling content on the net and connected to your 65-inch HD TV.

According to WMPowerUser, the complete specs for the awesome Tegra chip:

-800 MHz

-LP-DDR (200 MHz)

-2.5 ~ 4 watts envelope

-All-day media processing, for 130 hours audio, 30 hours HD video playback

-HD image processing for advanced digital still camera and HD camcorder functions

-Optimized hardware support for Web 2.0 applications for a true desktop-class internet experience

-Display support for 1080p HDMI, WSXGA+ LCD and CRT, and NTSC/PAL TV-Out

-Direct support for WiFi, disk drives, keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals

-A complete Board Support Package (BSP) to enable fast times to market for Windows Mobile-based designs

The Tegra chip was previously rumored to be used by Microsoft in developing its own Zune Phone–a phone that Redmond has repeatedly denied. Now, it is clear that the client will be HTC.

Will you be upgrading your beloved device of 2008 for a 2009 HTC device with improved performance? Given that HTC is already maxed out on current technologies, including processor (sure, we can go faster but it really isn’t that much more beneficial at this rate), screen resolution (WVGA and VGA is as high as we can go), and features (TouchFLO 3D, FM radio, TV out, etc), the Tegra chip may increase the theoretical limits of today and expand mobile computing to support more features and hardware. How cool would it be to have a WSXGA+ display. Of course with that resolution and a 3-inch to 4-inch screen display, you’d probably need a microscope to see text, but pictures, images, and videos should be crystal clear. Perhaps we can see Windows Mobile as a viable gaming platform, much in the same way that the App Store had propelled the iPhone into a competitor to the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. XBox Mobile in the new Microsoft SkyMarket App Store?
