Dell to Launch Smartphone in China

Dell’s smartphones were shown around to US carriers recently, but the carriers were unimpressed in the States citing that the phones offered no differentiation in a saturated market. Now, China is wooing dell to bring its 3G-capable smartphone to China Mobile. The original Dell designs shown to US carriers relied on a major operating system like Windows Mobile, which the company was involved with from its PDA days on the Axim line, or Android. However, the models being ported to China Mobile will rely on a proprietary operating system from the Chinese carrier.

According to mocoNews, China Mobile was hoping that a “flashy Dell addition” will stand out from its “currently drab” handset offerings, which have done little to entice Chinese consumers to the carriers 3G services..

If rumors are true, Dell’s phones for the Chinese market will utilize TD-SCDMA for 3G data and voice services, meaning that the phones will not be compatible with the rest of the world.
