CTIA: LG GM730 Windows Phone

AT CTIA in sunny San Diego, California, I had a visit with Microsoft at the Windows phone booth and got a chance to play with the LG GM730, which seems to be a US variant of the LG GM750 on Vodafone. The unit was nice, responsive, and LG did a fantastic job of skinning the device, leaving barely a trace of Windows Mobile on the device.

In fact, LG's skinning of Windows Mobile felt deeper than the comparable HTC Pure on AT&T--the menus and many applications had their own LG look and feel to them rather than the stock feel left by HTC on Pure in the software department. LG uses its own proprietary S-Class user interface. Unfortunately, despite the great attention to detail, LG misses one on the screen, which is only at a resolution of 240 X 400 making it a WQVGA device--WVGA would have been nice.

The device, originally announced at Mobile World Congress earlier in the year, has an optical trackpad like the Samsung Epix. It's going to be an exciting time for LG, a company that hopes to bring over a dozen Windows phone handsets over the next year or so.

Unfortunately, at the time, no one was available to demo the unit so I couldn't videotape it by myself. However, I did snap a picture of the device using the 5-megapixel camera on the HTC Imagio, as seen below.
