BlackBerry to Get Webkit Browser

Research in Motion just announced that they had acquired Torch Mobile, the company behind the Windows Mobile Iris browser. Iris has gained a bit of popularity and momentum since it was released for quick rendering times and decent performance.

At this time, it’s unclear what the fate is for the Windows Mobile development of Iris, but as it stands, it looks like BlackBerry devices may soon get decent browsing capabilities thanks to RIM’s acquisition. Considering Microsoft’s and Nokia’s jab at BlackBerry, this acquisition by RIM could leave one less browser for Windows Mobile.

Browsing development has been a weak point on BlackBerry devices as Blackberry devices hasn’t enjoyed the plethora of third party browsers as Windows Mobile has.
