The release of the Android Native Development Kit, otherwise known as NDK, will bring 2D and 3D games to Android closer to reality. The NDK supports OpenGL ES 2.0 and according to Engadget, “the so-called NDK is a bolt-on to the standard Android SDK that gives folks the ability to write and compile critical pieces of functionality in native code, closer to the processor without that pesky Java virtual machine standing in the way.” The NDK gives a development platform for developers to code for Android 2.0 or higher systems.
With the NDK, hopefully we’ll be seeing some 3D Android games in Android Market to rival the iPhone. Gaming thus far on Android has been very limited despite the excellent hardware provided by hardware such as the Google Nexus One and the Motorola Droid.
The Android NDK is available for download at this time.
