Today, InfoWorld posted a 3 page article examining the new Android 2.0 mobile phone operating system’s ability to integrate with business applications.. or lack there of. The author points out iffy Exchange policy support, zero management capabilities, and sub par security and configurability. The Exchange support can often be difficult to set up as well, and costs extra to enable on Verizon networks.
Even upgrading Android’s Exchange client to the 3rd party TouchDown application can cause problems. For example, TouchDown does not accurately report ActiveSync policy support to the Exchange servers.
The article mainly deals with Android 2.0, but I’ve also had bad Exchange experiences with Android on the HTC Hero. There’s no way to configure custom security certificates, and Exchange syncing often returns errors. I suspect some corruption occurring as well since syncing the Hero while other Windows Mobile devices are connected can also cause errors.
Overall, InfoWorld’s bottom line is: “If an IT organization considers the iPhone to be too unsecure or hard to manage, there’s no way it could consider the Droids as supportable mobile devices.”
