Before it was purchased by Sprint, I used to work for an American wireless carrier called Nextel. It differentiated itself from other carriers in several ways, one of them being its stable of durable hardware. Almost every handset was big, bulky, and nigh-indestructible.
My favorite phones to sell were those that met the requirements of U.S. MIL-STD 810. Though the standard is somewhat more flexible than is generally admitted, devices certified 810-compliant are broadly said to be capable of withstanding exposure to dust, shock, vibration, temperature extremes, high altitude [...]
So far, news about which Android handsets will be making the journey to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and which will be left behind to stagnate has largely been coming from the manufacturers themselves. Some, like Motorola, have detailed support pages up outlining which models should be seeing updates, and when. Today, though, that news is coming from a carrier, with Verizon publishing a list of devices on its network that are slated to receive Ice Cream Sandwich.

After a not so successful fourth quarter in 2011, when only 200k tablets were delivered to stores (not necessarily sold to users) and a net loss of about $80 million seen by the company, Motorola is trying hard to reach out to its customers and avoid having the Xoom “experience” again with the Xyboard tablets.
Motorola’s website now offers the 8.2 Xyboard with a free portfolio case ($39 otherwise) and a HD dock (usually at $49), for $399. In the same way, a similar deal is available for the larger 10.1 tablet for $499. The offer is available until February 29 [...]
If you have a Motorola Droid Xyboard 10.1 or 8.2 Android tablet on Verizon, you should prepare to see a couple of update notifications in the coming weeks. First you’ll see an update that will bring build 1.6.0M_279 and together with that, an improved browser performance, better touch response, maintaining data connection while toggling between WiFi and some more. Both tablets will get the same update, except for the “Stylus enhancements” which will only roll out to the 10.1 model.
Within two weeks from rolling out the update above, Verizon will let loose an [...]
The Motorola Xyboard 8.2 with WiFi and the Motorola Xyboard 10.1 with WiFi, which we’ve known since November, are now available for pre-order online at Motorola’s.
Successors of the Xoom, the two Xyboards go for $399.99 (for the 8.2 inch model) and $499.99 (for the 10.1 variant). They both pack a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, five-megapixel main cameras, 1.3-megapixel front facers and run Android 3.2 Honeycomb with the option to upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. If you’re sold on the new Motorola tablets and decide to pre-order, you’ll be getting [...]
