For the bloggers that cover them, one of the greatest things about trade shows is the opportunity to connect with counterparts from other publications ... and to podcast with them. Sometimes the best salve for a salvo of comparison videos shot back-to-back over 13 hours is a few minutes in front of the mic with friends, picking up the pieces while picking out the messages, trends, and lessons from the show. Helping us do that on today's Pocketnow Weekly podcast are two luminaries of the mobile tech world, both of whom have been on our guest "wish list" for over a year. Fresh from ...

Could this really be the "mini" phone you've been waiting for? The handset in the four-inch space that still packs the sort of processing might and HD display as a much larger smartphone? Sony sure managed to do right by us with the Xperia Z1 Compact, and today at IFA 2014 in Berlin we set out to see if the hot new Xperia Z3 Compact will quickly have us asking, "Z1 Compact who?" We can talk about the Z3 Compact's very capable hardware specs until the cows come home, but a phone like this one isn't just about the performance; as a smaller phone, we're acutely tuned to paying attention to ...

The Xperia Z3 may be the keystone behind Sony's latest Android offerings, but it's far from the only flagship the company has come to Berlin to introduce today at IFA 2014. Just moments after introducing the Z3, Sony has gone official with its little cousin, the 4.6-inch Xperia Z3 Compact. The Z3 Compact's a smidge thicker than its larger namesake, measuring-in at 8.4mm, but that's only because of all the goodies packed inside. Unlike other "mini" phones that skimp on specs, the Z3 Compact is powered by a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801, has 2GB of RAM, and as much as 16GB internal storage - with ...

Though it tends not to get the most media attention at IFA – Samsung has been stealing that spot for a bit now with its glamorous unveils – Sony almost always has quite a lot of things to show off at the Berlin trade show. This year is no exception, and the count for what the OEM plans to announce currently stands at seven mobile-related devices. That's quite a lot, so we were quite eager to get all the info in one place. So we went ahead and created a full rumor roundup for Sony's IFA 2014 announcements. Xperia Z3 Without a doubt the most anticipated product of this year's IFA is the ...

Sony should unveil its next flagship, believed to be the Sony Xperia Z3, at the upcoming IFA 2014 in Berlin. All the rumors and reports seem to agree on this, and the company itself has started teasing, however, without a specific mention of the phone itself. The picture above is allegedly one snapped off of a real-life unit, which seems to have a sheet glued to its back with the Xperia Z3 specs. While the accuracy and veracity of the picture itself can't be verified, the specs we're seeing seem credible enough. We're looking at a 5.2-inch 1080p TRILUMINOS display, quad-core Snapdragon ...

We already saw Sony's alleged wearables plans for IFA 2014, but that's not all we're going to see liked before the big event it seems. In a massive leak today, the Sony IFA 2014 plans for the Xperia line have presumably leaked in their entirety. First off, let's talk Xperia Z3. This one isn't much of a surprise, as it has been rumored for quite a while, but we have some pretty solid details about it this leak around. There's apparently going to be a 2.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 5.2-inch Triluminos display. There will be IP68 certification for water and dust ...

As we just looked at in our IFA 2014 Rumor Roundup, Sony's got quite a few new devices we're expecting to see launched next week. Those range from phones, to tablets, to wearables, to accessories, and a relatively consistent stream of leaks has been slowly feeding us information about many of them. But in contrast to companies like Samsung or ASUS, which have been delivering IFA teasers that outright identify their upcoming products, Sony's been keeping relatively quiet. Sure, we got some general hints from its invitation itself, but nothing really specific. Now the manufacturer is finally ...

Info about Sony's next Xperia flagships have been just pouring out of the woodwork lately, as we've picked up new details on not just the Xperia Z3, but also the Xperia Z3 Compact. As we wait to see if Sony really intends to release this pair at its IFA 2014 event in just a few weeks, we're continuing to pick up new details on the models, all in the hope of confirming some of these rumors. Yesterday, the FCC published some new certification docs on what sure seems to be the Z3 Compact, and in doing so the agency appears to confirmed the phone's rumored screen size. The FCC's got listings ...

Despite Sony's best efforts to stem the leaks surrounding the likely-upcoming Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact, they just keep on coming. We're greeted today with a new batch of alleged Xperia Z3 Compact pics, showing off more of what we're expecting. The new images don't tell us much more about the phone, but they do satisfy our craving for more information about Sony's ventures. As you can see in the image above, the camera looks confirmed as a 1/2.3-inch 20.7MP Exmor RS sensor with an LED flash, and the magnetic charging port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and dedicated camera button are all back for ...

Sony has already begun teasing what we should expect from the company at its IFA event in Berlin. We've seen numerous rumors of a Sony Xperia Z3 in the works, and we've even learned of a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact that's also making the cut. Today we see that Sony is already making preparations for these devices to be sold across Europe. Leaked certification documents show that there are three models that Sony is preparing for a probable launch at IFA. The three device model numbers are D6633 / D6603, D5803, and D2403. The D6633 / D6603 reportedly correspond to the Sony Xperia Z3 that we know ...

Late last month, word got out about Sony's schedule for its IFA announcements, revealing plans for a press conference on September 3. But while sometimes an invitation will take the opportunity to give us a little tease of what news to expect, all we knew about Sony's shindig was the time and date. Would we be left to speculate on our own about what might new products might be taking the spotlight? Maybe not, as now an image of a Sony IFA press invite has surfaced, and it seems to confirm some of our expectations. Now, we're not sure we're already seeing any new products, or anything like ...

Late last month a leak outed what were claimed to be front panels for the Sony Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact. While a little hard to believe at first, a series of subsequent leaks detailing the Z3 have really brought us around to the idea that this is a model Sony's working on. But what of the smaller phone, the presumed Z3 Compact? We haven't heard much of it since then, but now a new series of photos has arrived alongside some hardware rumors – the question is, is this the Z3 Compact or not? Here's the problem: while the basic shape of the phone is a close enough match to that front panel ...

Early last week we got to check out a couple components form unreleased Sony handsets, which sources claimed to belong to upcoming Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact models. It wasn't a lot to go on, but Sony did move quite swiftly from the Z1 to the Z2, so it's not crazy to think that we should already be talking about plans for the arrival of a Z3. Later, we saw a leak give us a little hardware insight into the Z3 Compact, but it didn't help us narrow down Sony's possible launch window any. Today, though, we finally start closing in on when this hardware might arrive, as a new carrier leak ...

A disturbing trend has emerged over the last couple of years in the smartphone space. The mini device has been brought forth in an effort to sell – well - something to the masses. The S5 Mini, the HTC One Mini 2, the Xperia Z3 Compact, so many mini’s, so few alliterations. With the recent introduction of the S5 Mini, we decided it’s time to give this category of devices the good ‘ol Weekend Debate once over. There are two classes of mini device when you look at it. One of those classes only has one device in it, so it is, quite literally, in a class all its own. The mainstream ...
