The Sony Xperia Z, along with the ZL, form Sony's Android flagships for early 2013. The phone has a five-inch 1080p screen, Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor, and a thirteen-megapixel main camera. One of its most stand-out features is its waterproofing, allowing the phone to function while fully-submerged, even recording underwater video. The Xperial ZL, though similar to the Z in many respects, lacks this key ability.

There's no disputing it: in terms of smartphones, Sony stole the show at CES 2013. Granted, that didn't take much doing, but we shouldn't let the lack of meaningful competition rain too heavily on Sony's parade. The devices the company unveiled at its booth a week ago are truly impressive. Those devices are the Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, a duo of high-end smartphones with quite a few specs in common. Each features a 5-inch, 1080p "Reality" display front-and-center, its graphics driven by Sony's Mobile Bravia Engine 2 and powered by a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro with 2GB of RAM. The camera ...

The Sony Xperia Z, alongside it's "almost twin" ZL, was introduced yesterday at CES. Sony didn't make any announcements regarding the official price of the phone but those in the U.K., or willing to import, can now pre-order the latest Sony phone. It goes for £440.00 sans VAT (around $710) unlocked and initial estimation sees stock arrive on March 1. The phone features a five-inch Full HD screen with 1080 x 1920 resolution and Sony's Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, a 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage and microSD card ...

The Xperia Z is one of the two phones Sony recently unveiled at CES 2013, alongside the fairly similar Xperia ZL, and, aside from taking a closer look at both the Xperia Z and ZL, we have compared it to the Samsung Galaxy S III and the Apple iPhone 5. A new video on Sony's Xperia YouTube channel shows off the device and its main features, including the full HD display, the 13-megapixel camera with Exmor R sensor and HDR video recording capabilities, as well as its ruggedized build. Check it out below and let us know of your thoughts. Source: YouTube

Android versus iOS is always a contentious issue, but with the great Android hardware we're hearing about at the CES this year, the heat's on Apple more than ever. Sony's next flagship is the 1080p Xperia Z; how does it stack up against the iPhone 5? With its screen measuring a solid inch longer in diagonal than the iPhone 5, the Xperia Z towers above its iOS competition, at least in its physical dimensions. For users who are already struggling to adjust to the iPhone 5 after years spent using smaller iPhones, that itself could be a big deal. Check out our hands-on video comparison to see ...

Samsung's Galaxy S III was one of the biggest smartphone success stories of 2012, so it only stands to reason that any Android with its sights on the top spot for 2013 will need to measure-up against the GS3. We've already given you a hands-on look at the Sony Xperia Z, one of the company's brand-new 1080p Androids, and now we wanted to see how it compares to the best from Samsung. While the Galaxy S III ran either a quad-core Exynos 4 or dual-core Snapdragon, and featured a 4.8-inch 720p screen, the Xperia Z is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon and has a 5.0-inch 1080p display. Both are ...

Of all the smartphones we've had a chance to learn about today, Sony's Xperia Z is arguably the most highly anticipated. Does it measure-up to all the hype? We went hands-on with the Xperia Z to find out. Despite the 1080p display, we were less than completely blown away, finding the screen's viewing angles to be just a bit lacking. We're also a little concerned about the heavy use of glass around the phone's edges, making us fear for its durability. For those of you who aren't big fans of OEM UIs, Sony's skinning, while still present, is at least a bit lighter than we might have expected ...

We've seen so many leaks of the Sony Xperia Z over the past few weeks, it almost felt like the Android had already launched. That's getting ahead of ourselves a little, but after catching some last-minute glimpses of the hardware last night, we're finally ready to see the Xperia Z made official. This evening, Sony wasted no time in doing just that, announcing the Xperia Z at its CES 2013 event. The Xperia Z is Sony's first 1080p smartphone, and features its proprietary BRAVIA 2 engine for enhanced picture quality. The flagship Android is dust and water resistant, 7.9 millimeters thick, and ...

Honestly, the way things had been looking thanks to leaks, official press renders, and teases from Sony itself, we would have been surprised if the company didn't have the Xperia Z (as well as the ZL) ready to show off. Even with that cat essentially out of the bag, confirmation is always a nice thing to have, and now a new on-location photo from the CES show floor in Vegas reveals the Xperia Z, all ready to go public. Sony's press event is scheduled to get underway tomorrow, at which point we hope to get the full skinny on the company's new Androids, as well as offer you some hands-on ...

With the discovery of some Sony-sourced images of the Xperia Z and ZL, you might think the once-Yuga-and-Odin were now out of surprises, and hopefully all set to go official at the CES next week. Well, we've got one more leak that might be worth checking out, chock full of images and information on the Xperia Z. These images, pulled from a leaked promotional video, show off the very shiny Xperia Z, constructed with what Sony's calling a skeleton frame, apparently a loose lattice onto which component panels are attached. Despite this assembly out of a multitude of individual parts, the ...

The Sony Yuga and Odin, aka the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, have been no strangers when it comes to rumors and leaks. We've recently seen the two phones allegedly captured on camera after previously hearing all sorts of hear-say about the two members of the 2013 Sony line-up. With CES just around the corner (and MWC following soon after that) the reports are becoming more and more numerous. This leak though is not your ordinary leak: it comes straight from Sony. The two press shots seen above have surfaced on the manufacturer's website and the file names are pretty self explanatory: we're ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about the recent rumors of Apple and Intel working together to build a new watch. Then Toshiba makes the scene after years of smartphone irrelevance to show us their new project, which consists of bringing Lytro technology to smartphones. Later we talk about the Sony Xperia X and Xperia Z which are rumored to be launched at CES 2013. Believe it or not, the HTC HD2 is next after almost half a decade of existence, and this time because it can now run Windows RT. We end today's show talking about Google's app choices for 2012's best. Yes, blooper ...
