While we're all waiting for the Galaxy Nexus to arrive and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to be released to the AOSP, the is another way that we can get ICS on our phones: ports from the ICS SDK. In most cases the result is closer to something you'd expect from "Dr. Frankenstein" than a "plastic surgeon" in terms of elegance and full-functionality, but being able to run ICS on your own phone before it's available to anyone else can be too hard to pass up! Since the SDK was released, here are some of the more noteworthy phones that have gotten the new OS ported to them: Sony Xperia X10 ...

This past summer, Sony Ericsson brought owners of the Xperia X10 into the present day by finally releasing a Gingerbread update for the phone, skipping Froyo altogether as it upgraded the X10 from Eclair. If you thought that action meant SE was interested in continuing to breathe some new life into the aging phone, think again, because it looks like that update will be the last the X10 may ever see. An X10 fan sent a tweet to Sony Ericsson's UK branch, where he wondered if there were any plans to get Android 2.3.4 on the X10; the late July update was for Android 2.3.3. Sony Ericsson ...

These are the Xperia Arc, Xperia Neo, Xperia Mini, Xperia Mini Pro, Xperia Play, Xperia Ray, Xperia X10, Xperia X8, Xperia X10 Mini, and Xperia X10 Mini Pro. According to the same post, this will be possible thanks to a joint effort with the FreeXperia ...

A couple days ago, after posting information on its website indicating that the long-awaited Gingerbread upgrade that would bump Xperia X10 smartphones right past Froyo from Eclair, Sony Ericsson quickly backpedaled and announced that we'd still have to wait a little longer for the code. The company still hasn't re-posted the Gingerbread upgrade information, but reports are coming in that the update is nevertheless going out, keeping SE on its earlier-reported schedule. On Monday, Sony Ericsson posted on Facebook that the plan was to start getting the update out sometime this week. It ...

It's hard to blame Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 owners for being excited about the update that will bring their smartphones to Gingerbread; after all, going all the way from Eclair, skipping straight over Froyo, is a pretty big step. Well, it looks like you're not the only ones who are excited about the release, as Sony Ericsson itself seems to have gotten a bit wrapped-up in X10 Gingerbread enthusiasm. Yesterday the company added Gingerbread info to its update page for the X10, making it appear to be all ready for download and installation to carrier-unbranded X10s. Now SE has had to ...

Yesterday Sony Ericsson posted on Facebook about the long-awaited Gingerbread update for the Xperia X10. The news was promising – that the code could arrive as soon as this week, basically dependent on carriers OKing it. While you're still stuck waiting for that approval if you're running a carrier-branded X10, the rest of you X10 owners can now make the leap from Eclair to Gingerbread, thanks to Sony Ericsson releasing the update for un-branded X10s. The myriad changes and features of Gingerbread and Froyo combined aren't all Sony Ericsson has in store for users, also including ...

We got our last update from Sony Ericsson on the fate of the Xperia X10's Gingerbread update about a month ago. The company provided some new details about what to expect, and mentioned that we could expect to see it arrive during the first week of August. Now it looks like SE might just beat its own August deadline, with a recent Facebook update saying that it could arrive sometime before the end of the week. The company's Facebook representative posted that he's been told the update's expected to go out during the 30th week of the year – this week. That's assuming that carriers give the ...

Sony Ericsson has a rather successful Android phone line-up with the MWC-launched Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia Neo and Xperia Pro. According to sources, the manufacturer is already testing a platform update for the above mentioned devices. The update would contain Google's newest Android mobile platform, Gingerbread version 2.3.4. In addition to the fresh OS files Sony Ericsson would also include a couple of new functionalities along with the Sony audio filter technology xLOUD. SEMC Blog's source also claims that, while this update will be available for the aforementioned phones October ...

If you have a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 you definitely heard about (or even tried) the new Panorama Beta application that allows you to capture panoramic images using your smartphone. Thanks to XDA Developers, you no longer have to have an Xperia X10 to use the application. Regardless of your Android smartphone's make and model, you can now have some panorama picture fun with Sony Ericsson's Panorama Beta as it has now been ported (hacked) to work on any Android smartphone. Please note that it's a beta in the first place and that, as a beta, it's a port (hack) so you might encounter some ...

Last week, a couple of signs emerged, pointing to the release of Sony Ericsson's Gingerbread upgrade for the Xperia X10 in the near future. Today the company posted an updated for Xperia owners to discuss the current state of the update, and it looks like we still have a short wait in store, with plans to begin distributing the update in early August. SE touched on some comments it's received regarding features that will and won't make it into the Gingerbread release. The X10 will get the same "Facebook inside Xperia" treatment as other Xperia models, featuring social network integration ...

Just a little bit more than a week ago Sony Ericsson released the Panorama Beta application for the Xperia X10 smartphone that would allow users to easily capture panoramic images using their Sony Ericsson-made device. If you have a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 smartphone -- advertised to only work with this model -- here's how the panoramic images you will capture will look. As with any smartphone camera, pictures taken in bright conditions come out best but the application does a decent job at stitching subsequent pictures together without an ugly noticeable overlap. Head over to the source ...

Earlier today, we got a look at a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 that appeared to be running Gingerbread. Was this a custom hack job, or a sign that the official update may soon be upon us? Luckily for X10 owners, it seems likely that the latter may be the case, with the reveal of some updated User Agent Profiles for X10 models showing the phones as running Android 2.3. The UAProfs for both the X10i and the X10a now list Gingerbread as their operating systems. Since this data is maintained by Sony Ericsson, there's little reason to doubt it. The company earlier announced, back in March, that it ...

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 on AT&T received its Android 2.1 Eclair update but the unlocked version of the smartphone has been pictured and even filmed running Google's latest mobile platform. As you can see in the video below -- and we definitely hope this is not a custom ROM --, it's Android 2.3 Gingerbread on Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 so it means there's hope for all of you out there still left behind on Android 1.6 Donut. Hopefully the manufacturer will go through with the updating process and from the build running on the device filmed there looks to be a new Kernel -- and hopefully ...

Sony Ericsson has released a Panorama application for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 that is available to download freely from the Android Market but is indended to work solely on X10 smartphones, and works in firmware version 2.1. Panorama Beta will allow you to easily capture panoramic pictures: "select a direction, press the capture button and then pan the camera to shoot your panoramic photo." Easy as that! Since this is a Beta application it means that it's still under development so you might run into bugs now and then but since you already know that head over to the source link and ...

According to PTCRB, the 2.1.B.0.1 is the latest firmware for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and it has slowly started to roll out to certain smartphones, though it's not the Gingerbread update many have been waiting for. Not much is known about the fixes and improvements but according to reports, the new system refresh version brings performance and battery life improvements. Also, the phone is reportedly switching faster between 2G and 3G networks and touch sensitivity seems to be improved, with multi-touch being enabled and working. There are also some improvements in the browser as ...

Last month we looked into the progress of work on cracking the X10 to boot custom kernels. While progress was very rough back then, it looks like significant headway has been made, as the Xperia X10 bootloader has been bypassed, allowing you to boot into the kernel of your choice. The demo code that has been released is a custom 2.6.29 kernel that's meant to just show that the technique works; expect more usable and useful releases to follow as developers start adopting the hack for themselves. If you just can't resist the temptation, the files you'll need are over in the linked-to thread ...

After previously stating that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will see no further updates in terms of operating system version numbers, the company has made a blog post stating the exact contrary. Turns out the popular Android smartphone will indeed be updated (at least that's today's stance) to Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The refresh is scheduled to hit end Q2 / early Q3 this year and "the intention is that the Xperia X10 will receive similar software and functionality that we have in our new 2011 Xperia smartphones". Well, skipping Froyo and going straight from Eclair to Gingerbread ...

It's Google Android 2.3.1 Gingerbread alright with working "Data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Timescape and GPS". As always with custom ROMs in early beta stages, there are some bugs, especially with sound output which is promissed to be fixed in the next release. DLNA, the Digital Living Network Alliance, is an organization that is trying to make all our digital content across all our digital devices play nicely together. Using this technology and compatible devices you can watch videos, listen to music, or view pictures on one device from another device -- without wires, over Wi-Fi. Many high-end Android-powered devices are coming with DLNA built-in. Others were supposed to join in later. Such is the case with Sony's Xperia X10 devices, which were supposed to get DLNA via an update. Unfortunately, according to Sony's blog, that's no longer the ...

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc was launched with the occasion of this year's CES in Las Vegas and is expected to hit the market in Q1 2011 with Japanese NTT DoCoMo already unveiling it as part of its line-up. Turns out that the system of the Arc has been dumped -- that didn't take long for the folks over at XDA Developers -- and the brand new Launcher has been extracted. The Unofficial Xperia X10 Blog reports that the Home Launcher is working as it should on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. Just a little bit more sluggish than on the Xperia Arc and Xperia Neo, it does indeed work and so does ...

If Sony won't release Froyo for their Xperia line of Android-powered phones, maybe it's time for us to take matters into our own hands. That's what some very talented developers thought! Most custom ROM development has centered around the flagship Xperia X10, but what of the X10 mini and Xperia X8? Luckily, they are now on the radar for custom ROMs, too! Though the ROMs aren't yet stable, development is well under way. Wi-Fi seems to be working fine across the board, but the camera (which always seems to be a sticking point) still has work to be done. Also, for you CyanogenMod fans, it ...

The eagerly-awaited pinch-to-zoom update for Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10 finally started to head out to customers in Japan a couple weeks ago, and now SE reports that the feature is on its way to the rest of you X10 owners. Other Xperia models from last year, including the X8, are getting their own updates, including the addition of support for the ANT+ wireless protocol. The X10 updates are going out OTA first, starting this week. It's been a long, hard road for Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10 when it comes to software. Its official Android updates have stalled-out on Eclair, and the phone has gone thus far without an anticipated software upgrade to enable multi-touch controls. Thankfully for X10 users, that latter issue is about to resolve itself: Sony begins to make that update available in Japan today, and for those who can't wait for a global release, coders have created a tool you can use to activate multi-touch yourself. Don't look for as immersive a multi-touch experience as you'd get on other smartphones, but ...

Over the last few weeks we've seen a couple sneak peeks at a Sony Ericsson Xperia phone, presumably the next X10 Mini Pro. While the company hasn't confirmed or denied any of those speculations, that assessment is starting to seem quite spot-on, as the company recently confirmed its commitment to the Xperia Mini line of phones, promising that such models are on their way. Steven Walker, who heads global marketing for Sony Ericsson, said, "all these lines we created in 2010 will roll forward into 2011 and beyond… We will see new Minis in the future." Walker also discussed how the company ...
