It was just a few short months ago that the idea of a "Nokia tablet" was fodder for only the most speculation-heavy episodes of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast. Well, time sure moves quickly, doesn’t it? The Lumia 2520 is the latest in a long line of Nokia devices we’ve covered this season, but as the company's first-ever Windows tablet, it deserves a close look before it goes on sale at AT&T this Friday. Announced at Nokia World 2013 and further teased via availability leaks ever since, the device has finally made its way to Pocketnow's Boston offices for a thorough battery of ...

De-packaging gadgets is fun enough as it is, but the joy is multiplied tenfold when the subject of the unboxing is a device you never thought would see the light of day. For months, the notion of a "Nokia tablet" has been little more than fodder for speculative debate on slow-news editions of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast. But now it's here, willed into solid reality by the events of Nokia World 2013, its sleek rounded edges beckoning from within its staid retail packaging. And by gum, we're gonna review it. But before we do that, we've got to get it out of its box. So tune in as we slip ...

A Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, five-inch 1080p screen, 2GB of RAM, and a 20-megapixel PureView camera, is what you should expect, if the rumors are true, to see on the upcoming Verizon Nokia Lumia 929 -- specs which are pretty much identical to the Lumia 1520, minus the one-inch-smaller display. We've seen a lot of leaks, rumors, and speculation and now we're hearing some more, this time, regarding a possible release date. November 21 -- this Thursday -- is what an anonymous tipster claiming to be a Verizon insider suggests. The tipster also claims that we'll see the Lumia 2520 on ...

Microsoft's Joe Belfiore is taking over some Internet Explorer duties within the company as his predecessor, Dean Hachamovitch, the person in charge with IE over the past years, is transitioning to another team within the software-giant. The Verge reports that Belfiore will lead a team focused on the app side of Internet Explorer and the user experience, something confirmed by Belfiore himself on Twitter. "Everyone asking: I’m still doing phone work, just adding IE & Windows UX as part of my next role focused on "phone/tablet/pc”. #notgoodbye!", says the tweet at the source ...

Fun fact: flame wars, petty bickering, and troll hijinks aren't just confined to the online world; they find a ready home in corporate tactics as well. That's a reality we were reminded of this week, as Apple announced its new iPad family on the same day Nokia unveiled not just its first Windows-based tablet, but also the first-ever Windows Phone phablets, at its Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi. Predictably, the Apple news obliterated Nokia's announcement in the news cycle - but, the Pocketnow Weekly being a platform-agnostic, equal-opportunity podcast, we're gonna cover both new device ...

Size is one of the trickiest trade-offs in the mobile industry. You want a device with a large enough screen to comfortably work on, yet portability issues demand that the overall size of our phones and tablets remain constrained. This year in particular we've seen great strides in combating that issue by means of shrinking-down side bezels. Of course, you could just say “the heck with any sensible size restraints” and come up with something along the lines of Microsoft's latest Surface promotion, a 17-foot-tall Surface 2 it's set up in London. This giant Surface 2 is even functional, ...

Windows RT continues to cause Microsoft headaches, and while some users are perfectly happy with what it offers, others have been frustrated by limited functionality and app selection when compared to tablets running full versions of Windows 8. We've already seen Microsoft drop the “RT” name from the Surface 2, and recently heard the company discussing user confusion stemming from the RT/Pro distinction. This week, we see some further signs of this move to distance itself from the memory of RT. First up, there's the old Surface RT itself. While the new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 are ...

Nokia's announcements today have come and gone, and while we didn't end up seeing every last little product we heard rumored, the big ones sure landed. That means that the first Nokia Windows RT tablet is now official, the Lumia 2520. And what a tablet it is: 1080p display, 2GB RAM, LTE connectivity, and the stalwart Snapdragon 800 powering everything. But is it really everything it could be? Nokia says the tablet "takes everything you've got in your desktop or laptop and crams all that into a device that’s only 8.9mm thick and weighs a little over a pound." Well, I don't think that's ...

This has been a year full of believers and non-believers in a Nokia that would ever build a tablet. The world has been full of rumors, but it took the company so long to actually make those rumors true, that even some of the believers began losing faith, and specially when the words "Windows RT" were included in the mix. Still, the product is now a reality, and we can't wait to give it a try. As expected, the Lumia 2520 looks like a bloated Lumia smartphone, though it packs a 10-inch 1080p display that boasts brightness at an impressive 650 nits under Gorilla Glass 2. It's packing LTE ...

Microsoft's first round of Surface tablets wasn't without its problems, and for us many of those focused squarely on the Surface RT. We had question not just about whether or not the tablet's hardware was up to the job, but also about the idea of Windows RT in the first place, offering users a seriously limited slice of the greater Windows ecosystem. This year, we saw Microsoft drop the "RT" from the Surface 2's name and wondered if this was some way to distance itself from the RT brand. Some comments from Microsoft product marketing manager Jack Cowett have us thinking about another ...

Black, white, red, and cyan were the colors mentioned in the first Nokia Lumia 2520 leak, and we've already seen the cyan and the red variants' renders. However, a new leak, this time, from another source, seems to add two additional colors to the table: yellow and green. The tablet is expected to be unveiled at Nokia's October 22 event, alongside other Nokia devices. As far as this leak is concerned -- you can see renders of all purported colors at the source link -- we advise you to stay a bit skeptical, because we're dealing with a new leakster (the Twitter account has been created for ...

Here's a quick one! Remember the Nokia Lumia 2520 leak from yesterday? It was an alleged press render of a cyan Nokia tablet, allegedly codenamed Lumia 2520, which will be available, according to the report, in black, white, red, and cyan. After seeing the cyan model render, we are today presented with the red variant. We can, of course, expect to see the other two color options being leaked, but we'd be more interested in seeing the back of the slate, alongside some hardware details. Nokia is expected to unleash several products at its Abu Dhabi October 22 event, and the above tablet is ...

We were only just thinking about the struggles Microsoft's had with its first-gen Surface tablets, specifically the Surface RT, as news arrived that sales of this year's new Surface 2 models could be off to a strong start. But even as Microsoft gets ready to put the original Surface RT behind it, it doesn't look like it's quite willing to forget about just how bit a mess that all was, and at least some of the blame is falling on Steve Ballmer – and his pocketbook. Microsoft just published its 2013 proxy statement, which discusses executive compensation. Now, Microsoft's a big company, ...

We first heard about a certain RX-114 codenamed Nokia tablet back in July with the occasion of some benchmark results, and we advised everyone to treat the info with caution, knowing that these results can be faked. Towards the end of August, the same model number Nokia tablet popped up in reports, again, this time alongside some other model numbers from the Finns (and said report accurately predicted Microsoft's Surface 2 plans). Now said Nokia RX-114 tablet got approved by the FCC and judging by the frequencies supported in its radio it could very well work with AT&T, T-Mobile, ...
