I’ve learned that there are two things about being a smartphone-and-tablet reviewer. The first thing: you get to handle awesome gadgetry days or weeks ahead of its official release date, and you’re not just allowed to use the heck out of it; you need to, in order to do your job. That’s the awesome thing. The other, less-awesome thing: you eventually have to give it all back. “Empty Nest” is a recurring column discussing what I miss -and what I don’t- about the devices I’ve had to return. ___ My relationship with Microsoft's first self-built tablet has always been ...

With iOS maintaining its firm anti-Flash stance, and seeing Adobe back away from work on Flash for Android, it may have seemed like the book was closed on Flash's mobile story. For all the problems it's had finding a home on smartphones and tablets, Flash is still a huge part of how many of us access the internet. As such, it turns out that Flash still has a little bit of a fight left in it, and will be finding a more prominent home on Windows 8 based tablets. So far with Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8 and Windows RT, if you were surfing the web in tablet mode, you had to manually ...

Samsung's Windows RT-running ATIV Tab has been on our radar since last summer, when we got an early look at the tablet at the IFA in Berlin. As summer turned into fall, and Windows 8 launched, we wondered what was to become of the tablet; eventually, we got word from Samsung that it wasn't going to be bringing the ATIV Tab to the US, citing consumer disinterest with Windows RT in general. Despite its absence here, Samsung still made a push for the ATIV Tab abroad, hoping to find a market for the device. Unfortunately for the company and its tablet, it looks like those efforts fell short, ...

Last month, Windows RT users saw the arrival of a jailbreak tool to remove one of Microsoft's restrictions imposed upon the new platform; by taking advantage of the tool, they could run non-Microsoft-approved executables in the tablet's desktop mode. That was cool, but you couldn't just run any old Windows app for a PC, as code had to be compiled especially for the ARM processors in tablets like the Surface RT. Open source apps could be recompiled with such goals in mind, but that still left a lot of commercial software unavailable. Now there's some progress towards overcoming that ...

Microsoft, Nokia, Windows fans -- and not only -- have been waiting for quite some time, wanting a Nokia-made tablet. An image of what was at the time believed to be a Nokia slate in the works triggered official reaction and so far it's disappointing for those that want a Windows RT or Windows 8 tablet made by Espoo. Further speculation -- "following extensive channel checks" -- seems to confirm the lack of Nokia tablets at the upcoming MWC. Strategy Analytics believes that the Finnish phone maker will have an approach which will materialize in a strong smartphone push at this year's ...

When we got the chance to check out an image from a recent Nokia Pakistan launch event yesterday, one showing-off what appeared to be a Windows 8 tablet alongside a Nokia Lumia smartphone, we had our doubts. At the time, we didn't want to dismiss it outright, having just seen what appeared to be an inadvertent leak from Nokia Russia, but at the same time it felt like a stretch – as we noted then, this tablet was itself right next to a desktop version of Windows 8, and we certainly weren't about to read that as confirmation that Nokia was entering the PC game. Now Nokia's had the chance ...

Rumors that Nokia is releasing a Windows RT tablet refuse to die, and despite comments from CEO Stephen Elop that seemed to suggest that such a tablet, were the company to even produce one, would still be quite a long way off, some fans hold out hope that the tablet could still be just around the corner. The latest contribution to the rumor mill is stoking those fires a little, but we're not quite sure it's anything to be getting excited about. Nokia Pakistan just had a launch event where it featured a picture of what appears to be a Windows 8 tablet. While there's the chance that this ...

If you were participating in our Hangout this afternoon, or just caught the replay afterward, you might have heard us touch briefly on one of our big dreams for Microsoft's mobile device ecosystem, the ability for apps to run on both Windows RT and Windows Phone 8 models. If the Surface could run WP8 apps when it launched, the story of its struggles may have played out very differently. There still may come a day when we'll get to see such cross-platform app support, at least according to a recent Microsoft job posting. While the posting has since been removed, now marked as being filled, ...

Microsoft's made a lot of strategic decisions when it comes to Windows RT and its Surface RT tablet, and those often have much less to do with what the hardware's capable of, or what consumers actually want, and more about preserving the company's image of how it want users interacting with these products. We saw a bit of that when covering the Windows RT jailbreak earlier this month, and the subject is coming up again now, upon hearing rumors that Outlook RT may be released for the platform. Mary Jo Foley has heard from a number of her sources that such an app has been under development, ...
