Windows finds itself smack dab in a period of transition right now. Users are shifting away from desktop PCs and even laptops to more mobile devices like tablets, to say nothing of smartphones themselves. And as this move continues, Windows becomes a more interesting operating system to us and our mobile focus. Windows 8 already saw tablets playing a major role, but missteps with RT and the lack of a cohesive Microsoft app ecosystem didn't do the platform any favors. We're already looking forward to what's next from Microsoft, and today we see invitations go out for an event that could ...

Most will agree that Windows Phone 8.1 was more than just a minor point update. We even gave it a full review. It bore a ton of new and useful features which finally put Windows Phone on the map for many people. Cortana, for example, is a major win for the platform. Action Center is a no-brainer. And the Start page got some much-needed pizzaz. The Windows Phone 8.1 update has come and gone. Maybe it's just because I don't use Windows Phone regularly, or maybe it's just because the platform still needs a lot of work. But talk of Windows Phone 9 has already started, and many seem to believe ...

Microsoft hasn't necessarily enjoyed much success with the launch of Windows 8, and the same can be said about its spinoff to Windows RT. Windows Phone 8 has seen some moderate success though, but it's clear that the company is desperate for a positive change in its results. For some, the smartest thing to do would be to start over, that's exactly what Microsoft plans to do under Nadella's administration. Sources close to Microsoft claim that the company is preparing to announce its next version of Windows in an event on September 30th. At the moment, both the date and the name for this ...

Already sick of Windows Phone 8.1? You may want to begin looking forward to early next year. A new report states that we could be seeing a Windows Phone 9 preview version, along with the same for Windows 9, any time between Q2 and Q3 2015. The leaked document this information comes from mentions the dates stated above for both preview releases, though it isn't too specific. Q2 and Q3 range all the way from April to September, so we are still far from an exact release date. Apparently, both Windows 9 and Windows Phone 9 are well into development, though there is still much time to go. We ...

Last week, we heard a rumor – please note this was a rumor – that Microsoft was planning on ditching Windows RT and combining it with Windows Phone 9. Awesome right? But this rumor also said that Microsoft was also going to be getting rid of its metro modern whatever-you-call-it interface in favor of something new. Lolwut? Now, it’s true that the Windows Phone hasn’t taken off as well as many would like. Windows Phone is still a distant third in the smartphone race (though we did kick Blackberry’s butt) and gaining ground via baby steps, rather than the leaps and bounds Microsoft ...

A couple weeks back we were talking about Microsoft's update strategy for Windows Phone 8, and how we might see some of the next minor, as well as major, updates arrive. Beyond the GDR builds and Windows Blue, what's left on the horizon? Well, a number of postings from employees seem to suggest that development on Windows Phone 9, as well as Windows 9 itself, is already well underway. This info comes from a number of sources, and a couple them are employee profiles on LinkedIn. That may not be the most reliable source for data, but it's nonetheless interesting to see all these mentions of ...
