The HTC-made Windows Phone 8X has recently received an official over-the-air update which not only addressed the random restart problems -- leaving the Nokia Lumia 920 users to test their patience -- but also brought a handful of new features which you can check out in our Portico update demo. Nokia confirmed on Twitter than an update will be pushed out to devices this month, without giving out special details though. The timeframe is obscure at the moment but given we're already half-way through December you should need to wait too long for those reboots to be gone. Hopefully, the package ...

Some Verizon employees are lucky to stand out from the crowd; not that the Droid DNA will be such a widespread device but even among those, you can spot the select few just by looking at the all-red phone they're carrying. Whether this is a Verizon or HTC thing is unknown but some will also stand out from the Windows Phone crowd. Limited edition Windows Phone 8X devices made by HTC are being gifted and not only these phones come in a new color but they also sport accented tones, pretty much like the Windows Phone 8S. And, as with any limited edition phone, all devices from the series are ...

With all the back and forth regarding the launch of the Samsung ATIV S -- otherwise the first Windows Phone 8 device ever officially announced, apparently the last on the shelves -- it is reassuring to hear some good news if you are a fan of the platform and of the South Korean manufacturer. Samsung still promised a 2012 launch of the phone -- and it appeared recently on T-Mobile Austria -- and it looks like our neighbors in Canada will be the lucky ones, if this report is to be believed. According to the leak above, Friday, December 14, 2012 is the day you should be able to snatch one ...

Front-facing cameras have for years been the red-headed stepchildren of the mobile world: included out of a sense of obligation or an attempt at differentiation when mobile video-calling first came on the scene, the tiny face-capturing modules were under-specced and underpowered -- and they've never really grown up. Even today's high-end smartphones typically feature front-side shooters with only 25% the resolution of the primary camera around back. The only company to really take the front-facing camera seriously in today's landscape is HTC: the webcam on the company's Windows Phone 8X ...

There were a couple of issues with Windows Phone 8 (and they were not device or model specific) like the reboot problem and the WiFi bit (though this one was not necessarily a bug) but they seem to be gone now, at least on some HTC Windows Phone 8X models, with the addition of an OTA update. According to reports, global versions of the phone are getting an OTA update which will bump the OS version all the way to 10211. With it comes a fix for the reboot problem, the option to keep WiFi alive when screen is off, SMS drafts and probably some others too. We're expecting the Lumia 920 to get ...

Microsoft kick-starts the smack-talk machine, which blows up in its face just as Nokia sells its own headquarters. The Lumia 822 gives us an excuse to launch a brand-new review format, while a Nexus 4 trade lets us take a post-review look at Google's latest smartphone. The iPhone 5S breaks its cover -maybe- while the Nexus 10 gives everyone a reason to care about big Android tablets - again, maybe. Rumors of a new 1080p device from LG get the speculation bonfire going again, but a cool bucketful of Google Play-colored cold water got us back on track. And, of course, it wouldn't be a ...

Read OnRemember back when we were waiting to get confirmation of HTC's first Windows Phone 8 devices, and the rumors seemed to suggest that we'd be seeing three such models from the manufacturer? While we ended up seeing two of them released as the 8X and 8S, there was a third device, attached to the codename Zentih, which never manged to surface. We heard some rumors that the phone simply didn't exist, but what if HTC does indeed have plans still in the works for the smartphone? That's something to keep in mind as we look at a survey Microsoft has been distributing to Xbox Live users, which ...

Verizon phones sure have been becoming a lot more attractive since the carrier started offering LTE service, bringing a SIM slot to its hardware. That's led to some great developments like the iPhone 5 on Verizon being unlocked for operation on GSM networks, right out of the box. That situation continues with the release of HTC's Windows Phone 8X, and combined with other Verizon exclusives, it's making that version of the phone one of the most intriguing around. Verizon already has a bit of a leg up on the other carriers offering the 8X as it has an exclusive on offering the hardware with ...

According to reports some owners of HTC Windows Phone 8X devices, as well as Nokia Lumia 920 phones, are experiencing random reboot issues. While others might be just fine, the issue is affecting an unspecified number of phone, to the extent that Microsoft and OEMs promised to look into it. Microsoft believes to have reportedly identified the reboot problem. "We’re continuing to investigate some reports of phones rebooting and have identified a cause with our partners. We are working to get an over-the-air update out in December", says a Microsoft statement. Further details about the ...

"We bet Windows Phone is a better match for you", says the official wording on this playlist by Windows Phone on YouTube. You surely remember the "Smoked by Windows Phone" series of videos that have kicked off at this year's CES, putting Microsoft employees using Windows Phone 7 against regular users of competing platforms. If the Windows Phone 7 "smoked" series aimed at showing off the speed of certain Microsoft-platform features, the Windows Phone 8 "Meet Your Match" campaign doesn't necessarily only focus on speed. The company wants to demonstrate how Windows Phone 8 is better, easier, ...

As we're moving further and further into November, Windows Phone 8 pre-orders are turning into shipped handsets, and phones are slowly but surely working their way onto retail shelves. The latest availability news comes from T-Mobile and Verizon, both of which are stepping-up their WP8 games this week. We looked at the situation with Verizon last week, upon getting word of just when its WP8 pre-orders would ship. Those should have gone out as of yesterday, and now Verizon is talking about the start of full-blown sales. Beginning tomorrow, you'll be able to purchase the Nokia Lumia 822 and ...

HTC's and Nokia's flagship Windows Phones for the holiday season were just released last week. Samsung has one coming a bit later, but right now the Nokia Lumia 920 and Windows Phone 8X by HTC are the two top of the line Windows Phone 8 devices available... and they are very different in many ways. First off there is a significant size and weight difference. The Lumia 920 is heavier and thicker and wider and has a larger physical screen size. They both have dual core 1.5Ghz processors, but according to the benchmarks, the Lumia 920 is a little faster. The screens are very different ...

Yesterday was just full of Windows Phone 8 news out of Verizon. Not only did we learn that the carrier would be kicking-off pre-orders for the HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 822 as of today, but we also heard about the inclusion of wireless charging support in the 8X's hardware. Now that Verizon's taking customer pre-orders, it's given us an idea of just when these phones will start showing up on customers' doorsteps. By and large, Windows Phone 8 pre-orders placed through Verizon will ship by next Tuesday, November 13. That includes both the 8X and the 822, though there is an exception: if you ...

In order to save battery power Windows Phone is turning WiFi off when the device is sleeping (screen off) relying on your data connection (if available) to keep all the sync activities working. According to a recent report Windows Phone could use your data for streaming music from the Xbox cloud even if WiFi is available. How is this possible? Since WiFi is turned off when sleeping, if the streaming process has started in that state, it will reportedly continue to stream over Data Connection even if WiFi is available. Said report mentions that the issue happened several times on a Windows ...
