Nokia is the unparalleled king of Windows Phone smartphones. It dominates the market, and its handsets are easily some of the most desired; even users of other platforms have commented highly on their design. The company has been expanding its WP lineup to include some incredibly affordable models, like the Lumia 521, but despite all it's done, sales just aren't where they were before Nokia switched gears and aligned itself with Microsoft's platform. At Nokia's recent shareholders' meeting, investors voiced their frustrations with the choices the company has made to bring it to this ...

Like so many other Windows Phone apps, the implementation of YouTube available to users of the platform left a lot to be desired. Instead of a Google-crafted joint like you'd see on Android, this Microsoft-developed version was, at best, a pale imitation of proper YouTube, pointing you to the web-based site. While this remains a Microsoft project, today a new release of the app arrives that goes a long way towards bringing Windows Phone an up-to-date YouTube experience. The updated app adds a new playlist look, allows for background playback of videos when you just want to listen to their ...

With all this official stuff on the Nokia Lumia 928 starting to land, that handset is slowly casting off the garments of rumor and speculation and preparing to step out into the light. It doesn't look like it's doing so without a new mystery Nokia handset rising to take its place, and today the image up above is getting some attention, thanks to that handset in blue on the right. This image comes from the cover of a leaked Nokia document outlining some of the company's smartphone strategy. The doc talks about humanizing Nokia phones through a focus on things like City Lens, Here, and tech ...

It's almost getting funny at this point, the extent to which the cat's out of the bag when it comes to the Nokia Lumia 928 for Verizon, yet there's still no formal announcement of the smartphone. As we wait for word, more and more evidence of the model's existence and impending launch continues to arrive from official sources; we had the billboard yesterday, and today get to share with you both a magazine ad featuring the 928, as well as the phone's landing page on Nokia's US site. The two-page ad in Vanity Fair invites users to "capture the highlights" of their lives using the 928's ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about Windows Phone 8 GDR2 and a a possible release date along with some billboards that show us what the Nokia Lumia 928 is all about. Then we move to HTC as the red HTC One shows itself in the UK, along with the fact that HTC has improved in sales this month when compared to last month. Then we go through the BlackBerry R10 being compared the Q10, just to make your choice for either much easier since the R10 is just ugly. Later we go through the leaks of a mysterious LG phone we assume to be the Optimus G2, and then we talk about the reports that ...

Bill Gates was talking tablets this morning as he took to CNBC to discuss Microsoft's Surface models, as well as the tablet landscape in general. Of course, that inevitably led to discussion of the Apple iPad. Gates found a number reasons to be critical of Apple's tablet offerings, mentioning the lack of Microsoft Office, for one. Well, that may be out of Apple's hands for now, but another one of his comments has us wondering if Gates can hear himself speak, singling-out the iPad for a disappointing typing experience due to the lack of an official hardware keyboard option. Now, Surface, of ...

Unless our crystal ball has been giving out some seriously wrong readings, it sure feels like Nokia's next smartphone to launch will be the Lumia 928 for Verizon. As if all the leaked renders weren't enough, the handset may just have been spotted in the flesh at a Nokia party last week. With a press event scheduled for May 14, we've been wondering if it isn't just about time for the 928 to finally step out into the spotlight. Today we get one more sign of its impending launch, with the discovery of an early Lumia 928 billboard. According to the Nokia fan who snapped the pic, this ad was up ...

Ever since we first heard about the HTC Tiara, which would supposedly arrive running the forthcoming Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update and get here sometime this month, we've been thinking about May as when general distribution of GDR2 might get underway. The latest news to arrive along that front suggests that it could actually be just a little bit later than that, but not by much. Down in Australia, carrier Telstra is telling its subscribers that Nokia has told the company to expect to receive GDR2 updates for testing purposes sometime in mid-May. Carriers like to take a few weeks to evaluate ...

We all know that Samsung and Apple are two of the heaviest heavyweights when it comes to smartphones, and any time we're hearing about profits or market share, they're going to be leading the pack. Still, do we appreciate just how large they've gotten, and how quickly their sales have risen? It can be easy to get swept-up in the here and now of sales data, but taking a look back on how all the big smartphone companies have been performing over the past several years can offer us some new insight into the scale of Apple and Samsung's success. The chart above comes from revenue data from ...

Thanks to a number of leaks, we've got a pretty good idea what the unannounced Nokia Lumia 928 is going to look like. This guy feels like he's been hanging in the shadows so long that we're aching to learn when Nokia's finally planning to go public with the model. With a Nokia event just two weeks away, we're anxious to see if the 928 will take the spotlight, but in the meantime we might have just caught a sneak peak at the 928 in action, where it might have just showed up at separate Nokia gathering. This shindig was no product announcement, but a private concert where Nokia provided ...

With the exception of Nokia and its Lumia 520 and 720 models, the last few months have been pretty quiet when it comes to new Windows Phone hardware. There have been plenty of rumors about what might be next, and today we get to hear a few new ones, with some claims attempting to round-up what hardware will be arriving in the near future. Now, this info comes from a Reddit thread, and while it's posted with some authority, we really can't attest to just how accurate any of it is; as such, please don't take any of this as gospel. We've already talked a lot about Nokia's EOS and Catwalk ...

One of the hardest parts of attracting users to a particular smartphone platform is convincing them to abandon the ecosystem with which they've already invested considerable time and money. After all, your OS might be great, but if that means having to start from square one with apps, movies, and music, it just might not seem worth the while. In order to help convince Android users that they should think about jumping ship for Windows Phone, Microsoft has released a new tool to find replacement apps, but is it really all it's cracked up to be? Switch to Windows Phone scans your Android ...

It's no secret that we're seriously jazzed about T-Mobile's crazy-affordable pricing for Nokia's Lumia 521, selling the Windows Phone 8 handset for a scant $150. As we've mentioned when discussing this bargain, that's quite a bit less than what the international 520 has been going for, which we've seen more up around the $200 mark. Luckily for all of you not situated in the States, it looks like Lumia 520 prices are starting to come down to meet the 521's, with Canada's Koodo Mobile pricing its 520 at the same $150. Granted, those are Canadian dollars, but with the exchange rate what it ...

Not all of us have read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so not all of us were exactly qualified to make the lame joke that kicks off this week's podcast. But we made it, and we stand behind it. Because as hundreds of fifth-rate "manufacturers" well know, sometimes you just have to fake it. But we're not talking about secondhand knockoff products in this episode of the Weekly. Rather, we get serious about octa-core comparisons, the till-recently-mythical HTC M4, the insanely cheap new Lumia out of Finland, and just how tired we are or aren't of the Samsung Galaxy S 4. In between, we ...

You've been asking for it: a head-to-head matchup of the best of Windows Phone with (one of) the best of Android. We had to get the hotter comparisons out of the way first, but here for your viewing enjoyment is the latest piece of Nokia versus Samsung hotness to come out of Pocketnow. Why the delay? Funny you should ask. We've been churning out quad-vs-octa, Samsung-vs-HTC, and Galaxy-vs-Galaxy comparisons first because, at the moment, they're the more apt head-to-heads. Nokia's Lumia 920 is a half-year old at this point, and the truth is, putting it up against the newest Samsung ...
