Waterproofing is definitely one of the hotter smartphone features around in 2013, and we're seeing it come to an increasing number of models. Today we may get a new handset to add to the ranks of the GS4 Active and the Xperia Z, as the new teaser image Huawei posted to one of its Facebook accounts sure seems to imply that the company has a waterproof Windows Phone handset nearly ready to launch. While Huawei doesn't name the phone, we're almost certainly talking about the Ascend W2, which we've seen in a number of leaks over the past several weeks. Specs for the handset have already ...

Who's the person responsible when a smartphone company really nails a handset launch? Who do we blame when a product bombs? While there are any number of engineers, designers, marketing folk, and executives involved with the release of a new device or service, when it comes to giving one of these corporate entities a face, more often than not we look to the company's CEO. Sure, up on this same level we can find all matter of presidents, board members, and chairpeople (persons?) overseeing a company's business, but in the end it's the Chief Executive Officer making the managerial decisions ...

Ever since Nokia hitched its wagon to Microsoft and Windows Phone, it's been difficult to think of the two companies as wholly independent entities; after all, Nokia's carrying the bulk of WP smartphone sales, and Microsoft gives the OEM some special access that other Windows Phone manufacturers aren't similarly able to enjoy. As such, it's no news to learn that the two are working closely together, but some new comments from Nokia reps have us wondering if specific could be in the works for this summer. At a recent UK Lumia 925 event, Nokia talked about "working even closer" with ...

Now that it's all said and done, we know iOS 7 is pretty light on new features. Siri has a few new parlor tricks; Control Center now allows users to quickly toggle settings without navigating to the Settings app; Notification Center sports a less cluttered, more useful interface; multitasking is smart and learns which apps you use most; and Safari handles tabs better than ever. And, yes, we have a few complaints about the update – like how it's still closed down and, despite the giant app ecosystem, doesn't allow third-party sharing or user-defined default apps. Feature-light or not, ...

Sometimes, a purported render of a new smartphone really leaves us scratching our heads. Maybe it's totally legit, but the design is so off-kilter that we can't help but wonder if it's a fake – like what happened when we got an early look at the HTC One. Other times it's a really well-done fake that hits enough of the right notes that we can't quite tell if it's real or not. And then there are those times when we're just left wondering how anyone could think a sloppy fake is anything even approaching a real image – that's the boat we find ourselves in today, with a supposed HTC Tiara ...

We were there in London for the Nokia Lumia 925 launch event on May 14. Less than a month later the Nokia Lumia 925 becomes officially available in Germany, as the first market to get the phone. Nokia promises that other European markets, China, the U.S., and select countries worldwide will follow. The phone packs a 4.5-inch AMOLED screen with WXGA (1280x768) resolution and is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. Has 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, and a brand new camera construction with six Carl Zeiss lens in top of a 8.7-megapixel PureView camera. There's also a 1.2-megapixel ...

Damian Dinning is the person responsible for many awesome camera innovations at Nokia. Before leaving the company -- his place was taken by Juha Alakarhu -- he brought PureView to the world, first, in the form of the Nokia 808, then, the Lumia 920 with PureView stage-two. The Nokia 808 PureView features, among many other camera innovations, a mechanical shutter. While the Nokia EOS is nothing but a (recurring) leak at the moment, it is rumored to have a camera system which heavily relies on the one used in the 808. A recent leak tries to depict the same construction, including a ...

Here's something to think about this weekend. A Reddit user claims to have purchased a Lumia 920 on eBay with a version of Windows Phone never seen before. There are also a couple of alleged screenshots among which a Windows Phone Notification Center and apparently a new Calendar interface. Microsoft’s Thomas Fennel said the company "ran out of time" when speaking at the Build conference last year, referring to a Notification Center. The screenshot above claims to be just that. The alleged Lumia 920 is running Windows Phone build 12084.WPMAIN(wpbldlab).20130509-1407 from May 9. It also ...

The rumored HTC Tiara Windows Phone handset first popped-up back in February. Later, we heard from Sprint that it would get a late start on Windows Phone 8 with a pair of smartphones, and a rumor suggested one would be the Tiara. Eventually, we caught wind of a phone identifying itself as "HTCP0881_Sprint" and wondered if it this was the Tiara we were looking at. Now that same model's back, getting its FCC certification and preparing to launch on Sprint. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to match up the HTC model PO88100 which just saw its FCC paperwork go public with that HTCP0881_Sprint ...

It might be safe to dial down the skepticism on the recent Nokia EOS leaks. More and more information is hitting the interwebs, and the latest is a video with a close-up of the camera system on the back of the rumored upcoming device. You can check that video out at the bottom; those who have seen, or own, a Nokia 808 PureView, will instantly recognize the lens system, lens cover, and mechanics. Everything appears to function like on the 808 PureView, from the lens cover to the lens movement, which lends us to believe there might be (should be) and ND filter included too, like on the ...

What's the deal with Instagram on Windows Phone? We've been hoping to see this app arrive for what feels like ages, and while we've seen the arrival of some workable substitutes, we'd really love to avoid yet another off-brand WP app experience and have a full-on, official solution. Nokia's been busy campaigning with its #2InstaWithLove app, and today we get word that a proper Instagram client could actually soon be on its way to the platform, with rumors suggesting a launch this month. The details are a little unclear, but the release date is supposed to fall on a Wednesday in June, with ...

For a while now, the mobile-tech review landscape has looked much the same. Reviewers like us craft lengthy written pieces packed with charts, photos, and videos, and readers like you ... read them. Sure, you have the opportunity to respond in the comments, and most good editors will answer questions there, but there's precious little real-time interaction between reader and reviewer. There's not much chance to ask questions, seek clarifications, or take a quick look at that one little detail. For a while, we've been trying to break down the wall between reviewer and reader - to allow you ...

Sometimes you get listener mail that asks how the band got together in the first place. Sometimes that happens the day after you drop some nostalgic sentimentalism all over the internet. Sometimes, simultaneously, there are some sweet, juicy rumors and leaks about a top-of-the-line camera phone with what looks like a moon crater on it. Sometimes you gotta put all that into a podcast with the original cadre of Pocketnow 'casters, and see what comes out. All that, plus the longest outtake reel in the history of Pocketnow, more Nokia EOS rumors than you can shake a stick at, the first-ever ...

Feature-for-feature, the official Twitter app for Windows Phone may lag behind the software available on platforms like iOS or Android, but it still endeavors to do improve, and today we see the arrival of an update that manages to pack in a whole bunch of new features. More than one of these improvements are photo-based, like the app now supporting external lens apps in Windows Phone 8. The app itself gets eight new built-in effects filters. It's also now more convenient to embed a pic in a tweet your composing, and the app supports saving tweeted photos. Windows Phone may not have a ...

As more and more images of Nokia's rumored 41-megapixel PureView EOS emerge, we're finding ourselves dialing-back the skepticism a little. Granted, there were some explicit signs of image manipulation in some of what we saw yesterday, but that need not necessarily speak to the illegitimacy of the hardware being depicted, and with similar images arriving from multiple sources, all of this is starting to seem very real. So far, we've had a number of looks at incomplete shells, as well as some at the assembled EOS, but now we get to take things one step further and get to see a powered-on ...
