Even if it takes six Skype calls to make a podcast happen, we're gonna do it for you folks, because that's just the kind of guys we are. And it's a good thing, too; while the news cycle has calmed down somewhat in the wake of last week's big BlackBerry event, there's still plenty to talk about from the worlds of Android and Windows Phone, from rumors and speculation to ... well, no, just rumors and speculation, really. But it's scintillating stuff, especially if you're into things named "M7" and "Nokia Tablet." All that, plus listener mail and a heaping helping of Joe Levi's robot voice, ...

We've got a few updates on phone updates (no pun intended) which we've already talked to you about before, concerning the long-awaited Ice Cream Sandwich update for the HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon and the lack of Windows Phone 7.8 for Nokia's Lumia 710 on T-Mobile. Right at the end of January, we got a big surprise when we saw that Verizon had posted documents on its HTC Thunderbolt support page indicating that the phone's Android 4.0.4 update was finally going to arrive. The update was supposed to come to the phone last summer, and after going absent for so long, we had really started to ...

It wouldn't be a mobile OS update without a few unexpected bugs, and Windows Phone 7.8 is no exception. With WP7.5 users all over making the switch to this WP8-lite, we're already hearing reports of a couple problems users are running into, including volume problems for Nokia owners, and some big data consumption issues with certain apps. Oddly enough, both these issues sound like re-hashes of old problems. Last year, we saw Nokia deliver updates to its Lumia models to fix issues with volume control, and now we're hearing more volume-related complaints from users who have just installed ...

Windows Phone 7.8 has been released and most of us with first and second generation Windows Phone 7 devices are able to upgrade.  If you didn't receive the upgrade automatically, there are ways to install it manually.  Some have been waiting for this for a long time since it brings a few new features including the new start screen with resizable live tiles.  Of course Windows Phone 8 has been available for a bit longer, and it offers many dozens more improvements over the 7.8 update for older devices, but it turns out there are a few areas where Windows Phone 7.8 is still a little ...

A couple days back, we saw the long-awaited arrival of Windows Phone 7.8 updates for existing models, with news coming in that first Nokia, and then HTC were making the update available to their users. If you didn't want to wait for your phone to get its official chance to upgrade, we even shared with you the technique for forcing Windows Phone models to accept the update. Still, we're sure some of you like to keep your smartphone nice and legit, and were waiting for your handset to be tapped for its formal WP7.8 update. If you've got a Lumia 710 on T-Mobile, you might want to rethink that ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about Nokia's MWC 2013 Press event details. We later go through some more Nokia news as we now have Windows Phone 7.8 information for legacy Lumia devices. The white Nexus 4 takes the spotlight next, but with the tough reality of getting the black model, we don't know if we should celebrate. Microsoft is next as we discover that the Surface Pro can barely provide you with storage if you stick to the 64GB model. We end today's show by talking about BlackBerry 10, the Z10 and Q10, aside from some bloopers at the end. All this and more after the break. ...

Since Windows Phone 7.8 was released today for some devices, the folks at XDA-Developers have already capture the URLs for the CAB files that are downloaded via Zune.  That means anybody can download them manually, and then use the "Cab Sender" utility to install them to any Windows Phone 7 device in the same way that your Zune desktop software would.  Be sure to read the instructions in the first post of the thread to learn how to install the update correctly.  You must send the proper CAB files to your phone in the proper order and it is very important that you include the correct ...

After months of waiting, and the past several weeks packed full of rumors about its forthcoming arrival, it was looking like updates to Windows Phone 7.8 were just about to arrive. Last week, we saw the most convincing evidence yet, making the case for the updates to start going out today, January 30. Sure enough, Nokia has just posted a message to its blog making the release official, starting distribution today and continuing into next month. Nokia says that owners of the Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800, and 900 can all look forward to seeing Windows Phone 7.8 updates arrive over the course of ...

There was a time when all of us at Pocketnow craved for the HD7, and as it turns out, now it seems that not even HTC wants to have a piece of it. Recently one of the proud few that still own a device asked HTC on Twitter if there are any specific dates as to when Windows Phone 7.8 will reach his device, and even though we were expecting the usual "it's coming soon", the response wasn't that nice. HTC responded that there are sadly no plans for the company to deliver Windows Phone 7.8, and the obvious "we'll get back to you if something changes". It's hard to tell if this will be the end of ...

There have been a ton of compelling rumors over the past few weeks concerning just when Microsoft's Windows Phone 7.8 update would finally become available, ranging from broader windows to some very specific dates. The most recent to come our way had us looking forward to January 31, but now a new leak makes it seem that the updates will start going out one day earlier, on January 30. WPCentral managed to get its hands on an internal AT&T email that lays the whole thing out for the Lumia 900. The approximately hundred-megabyte update will be available to subscribers next Wednesday, and ...

Life frequently defies our expectations. For example, if it's your first full season covering mobile-technology trade shows, sometimes you find your expectations for a nice, quiet lull between CES and MWC completely upset -toppled, really- by reality. For this editor, that reality came fast and fierce, delivering an unbelievable bounty of rumor and speculation at his doorstep on the morning of this week's Pocketnow Weekly podcast. The bright side: you get to hear all the latest news and gossip surrounding Galaxy S IV and Note 8.0 speculation; HTC's Droid DNA upgrade with a very James ...

Yesterday, we got a sort-of-official release date for the first updates to bring Windows Phone 7.8 to existing Windows Phone 7.5 handsets, as posted by Microsoft's Windows Phone Colombia Facebook account. Obviously, we'd like to see the same info parroted by a slightly more high profile voice at the company before sinking too much faith into it, but it's a good start. As we wait for the first updates to arrive, Microsoft is getting itself ready for the software's release, making the Windows Phone 7.8 SDK available to its development community. This release doesn't add any new APIs, and ...

So far this month, we've heard from a handful of entities, both carriers and manufacturers alike, as to just when existing Windows Phone handsets would start seeing updates to Windows Phone 7.8; new phones have already started arriving with the software installed, and the only question remaining has been when updates would come to WP 7.5 devices. As we heard more and more, the release window started narrowing in scope, and lately we'd settled on sometime in January. While that's currently a matter of less than two weeks, it would still be nice to know with a little more precision when to ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we go through the Samsung Galaxy S IV benchmark rumors that were recently made public. Then we move to Windows Phone 7.8 as apparently the update will reach devices before the month ends. Then we go through the rumors of a Sprint Windows Phone 8 in the works. Believe it or not, we later talk about BlackBerry 10 since the first US carrier to use it will apparently be Verizon. We end today's show as we talk about the recent UK experiment that will not ship you phones with a charger. All this and more after the break. Stories: - Should We Believe These Samsung ...

Wondering where Windows Phone 7.8 updates have been hiding? You're not alone, and over the past several weeks we've been keeping track of the latest news on just when you could hope to finally see this software arrive. That chatter's largely been coming from Europe, and we heard from two of Nokia's branches earlier this month. One reported that the update would be completed by the end of the month, but it was a bit of a craps shoot if any carriers would actually get it out to users within the same timeframe. On the other hand, another said that it would just be "a few days" until the ...
